The real secret though is what it costs to get them to do that. Those full customs were $5,000 give or take but the last Savage I bought was $314 at Cabela's (with veteran discount)- a model 12FV in 308 Win with cheapo plastic stock. I threw a Viper PST on it and from day one it has been crazy accurate no mater what kind of crappy ammo you put in it. That one is actually better than my prized full custom - so Savages can be one hell of a value. Eventually I did upgrade the stock to a Boyd's Prairie Hunter and though it is "better" it didn't really change how it shoots. And when you burn the barrel out it is easy to call up your favorite outfit and have them mail you a prefit barrel to slap on the action with no visit to the gunsmith required. What is not to love about that?
I've got a bunch of Savages and a buddy of mine has a few more. Between us we also have a few full custom rifles built on M70, Rem 700 actions. All of them will shoot 1/4 MOA or better as J. E. Custom was saying.
