Military personnel and pilots flying in darkness are often concerned with preserving their night vision and secure position, thus the need for pocket weather trackers. The Kestrel 4500NV model has the same features as its more colorful counterparts, but is olive drab or desert tan (4000 and 4500 models only) with a reduced brightness backlight which helps protect the users' adapted night vision. It takes 30 to 45 minutes for the average eye to adapt to darkness and maximize night vision. Even a short burst of white, yellow, green or blue light "bleaches out" the rod cell photoreceptors in the eye and causes night blindness until the entire adaptation process can take place again. The dim backlight of the Kestrel 4500NV Pocket Weather Tracker is also much more difficult to detect with the naked eye in night or covert operations.

It's NIB but how old is the unit? When did the original purchaser buy it? That's when the warranty started. Thanks

I'm not sure of an actual "date of manufacture" or when the unit was originally purchased. There was no date on the unit. I did however, find a date on the user manual. It stated "revised 5/12/10".

Being NIB, was the battery ever installed? If so, any idea how long its been in there and do all the functions work? I've had one Kestrel ruined by a battery sitting in it too long and Kestrel says they can't repair it.

Battery has never been installed. The packaging indicates battery included but there are none inside. Im assuming this is due to shipping restrictions.?.?. The foam piece inside the case has a cut out where I believe batteries are supposed to be. The foam insert has never been plucked out to make room for batteries.
I currently use one of these units with no problems. I would glady offer a return option, within three days of delivery, if you purchase one that does not meet your expectations.
