i am looking forward to all the discussions on long range shooting. i am new to he real long range shooting. here in ky. 500 yds is a long shot but i have recently found a place where i can deer hunt where the 1000 yd shots are possible. i know i have a lot to learn. and i am trying to set my 300 win mag. up to shoot past the longest shot that i have made is 430yds with my 7mm. i know that isn't far for your standards and that is why i joined so i can be a student and learn what gun and scope and caliber i need to start making those shots.

welcome! I'm new here as well. In Central Oregon, longest shot you can hope for is about 200 yards (at least in the units I hunt).
