After deciding to make a last-minute caliber change, I have a brand-new McGowen stainless barrel up for sale. This barrel also includes a brand-new Savage bolt head for 308 Winchester

- McGowen Precision Stainless barrel
- Savage Magnum contour w/ 0.725" muzzle
- 16" OAL
- Muzzle threaded 5/8-24 TPI class III, specifically for a TBAC suppressor
- 1/10" RH twist
- 308 Winchester (SAAMI) chamber
- small shank

In the spirit of full disclosure, the barrel did arrive with a teeny, tiny nick on the [span style='text-decoration: underline;']outside[/span] of the last muzzle thread (see pic). I called McGowen about it. Dan apologized, blamed his shipping department, and promised that it would not affect accuracy. I can tell you this nick does not seem to bother the thread protector at all.

Asking $225 shipped CONUS. No trades please

Thanks for looking

I have a savage model 12 (I believe) chambered in 300WSM with a 26" stainless heavy contour barrel. Would I be able to use this barrel and bolt head with my short action, or does the .308 require a long action. Done lot's of reloading over the past 35 years, but never a barrel/caliber change out on a rifle. I am also not up to spec on the .308.

Hmm . . .

1. You'll have to verify if your current barrel is a large or small shank. Only a set of calibers directly in front of the barrel nut will do. In order to work with my barrel, you'll need a diameter of 1.055"

2. You'll most likely need a new magazine follower. Specifically a 308/243/260/7mm-08 follower

Other than that, you should be good to go. A 308 uses a short action just like the 300WSM.
