Just joined from Texas

I've been shooting most of my life, lately I've decided to find out how well I can learn to shoot farther away. (I've never done much past 100 yards.) I could use advice on choosing a semi-beginner long-range rifle and scope- I'm pretty sure I want to shoot .308 because it's available and seems to be popular with long-range shooters, but that's really all I've decided. And for now I'll be using factory ammo, so I'll want advice there too for what's reasonably affordable and will go where it's pointed. This seems to be a good community of the right kind of folks to help out. Thanks in advance.
