I have not gone deer hunting in Iowa in over 10 years since I moved to Dubuque Ia. I have been going big game hunting out west & enjoying it. My Son Gradutated Collage & has never hunted Deer in Iowa so I told him I would take him. For you people that don't know Iowa is Shotguns only & this is some of my lack of enthusment for hunting here as I enjoy hunting with My rifles. Well I did a little scouting and found a place to hunt & yes it was on public hunting ground. Most people don't know this but in Iowa some of the best Deer & Duck hunting is on public ground, where as Pheasant hunting is on private ground. Well on opening day we were done by 9:00am with two bucks down & both of us turning down shots at smaller bucks. My Son shot his Deer at around 50yds & mine around 40yds we we're stand hunting just sitting on the ground. Temps the morning of our hunt was -2F so I had us pack in sleeping bags to sit in to stay warm.

Nice deer, I too am from Iowa. I spend a lot of money in other states for that very reason. Shotgun or muzzle loader. I do get to do some rifle antlerless in southern Iowa.

I would spend more money in state if the DNR opened a late rifle season instead of muzzleloader.

Congratulations, very nice. Have you ever considered a long range muzzle loader? I got one not long ago and have had a blast shooting it. Some are shooting out past 700 yards. We have a hunting camp in south west Iowa and I wanted to stretch my effective range so I thought I'd give it a try.
