Hear sonic crack if bullet does not pass

had my wife sit in the truck, window down at my 300 yard target and asked her if the sound was loud at the shot and she said it was loud by her but same distance away by the shooting bench very quiet. I will have to do the test sometime with some else doing the shooting to confirm what she heard

I will say from my experience with hunting, that the animals hear it but don't necessarily get alarmed or run off. They can't seem to figure out where it came from.

I have heard bullets snap while passing close to overhead, like pulling targets in a pit, figure it's a continually propagated shock wave in a "V" path behind bullet. Not too smart in acoustic stuff.

Depends on the distance. I used to set targets for 1000yd benchrest matches. Our safe zone was 100 yards away from the direct line of fire behind a hill. We were 600 to 700 yards from the firing line when the bullets passes by it sounded like someone threw a fire cracker up in the air.
