I've been looking at posts here for awhile and am impressed by what I've read. A very helpful bunch of folks. I haven't been on a hunt yet but finally got a "short-distance" .308 and scope to shoot, so next stop is the range to sight in.

Question: what is the max effective distance for a .308 - notwithstanding the scope - just the cartridge?

For a hunting situation you will need to look at the energy and velocity at the various distances to determine where the bullet may not get the job done.

For shooting paper or steel you can reach out to 1000 yds and maybe a little more.
