I had my rem pss 308 win bedded and the gunsmith left about an inch of bedding forward of the recoil lug underneath the barrel. Is this normal or should I remove it to make it completely floated?

That is a common practice , just make sure that the recoil lug is not touching the bedding anyplace but the back (action) side or you may have stress ,the recoil lug should have been masked off on the two sides , bottom and front.

James I can see it now, the smith uses tape about 5 thou thich, unable to accuratly measure the clearance, a newbie hawgs out the bedding under and forward of the lug with a small beaver!

Some times with a heavy barrel a couple of inches will be bedded past the recoil lug. it helps to take a little stress off the action.
