Use white paper.
And yes Sharpies
I staple white paper to a sheet of plywood with a 1.5" Black dot at 650-700 yards.
Color the bullets from Start of tip all the way to the case neck.
If you have trouble seeing a color take a Q-tip and dob a little alcohol on the bullet hole
 
I talked with Berger couple years ago on loads for 7 Rem Mag for the 168gr Berger. While talking with the Berger tech, he mentioned work seating depth test first at the lowest powder charge. Once you find the best node, then work the powder charge. I did as he mentioned and worked very well.
