What does the Ultra offer?

The feed lips on the inside of the action that hold the cartridges in the internal stagger feed BDL style box come in two widths. Originally they were all 30-06/300WM. When Remington released the Ultra Mag cartridges, they were too fat to fit between them, so they widened the feed lips to accomodate. These wider lips work with the fat bodied cartridges like the RUM and Nosler. We call them Ultras in reference to the Ultra Mag width. Now here's the trick. If you are building for a narrow cartridge (30-06, 300WM, 300PRC, 7PRC), you can still use the Ultra width if you intend to use a detachable mag or Centerfeed internal BDL style box. This is because the cartridge is controlled by the feed lips on the magazine or centerfeed internal box, and not the feed lips in the action. So the short answer is the BDL and Ultra actions are identical in every way except the width of the feed lips. I hope this all makes sense! -Brian
