CO ELK Draw is out

I've worked for west elk wilderness outfitters for the last seven years. This will be the first year I out in for a hunt myself. We pack in from soap creek campground and hunt west elk creek.

Great area. Snow hopefully will be knee deep to a tall indian by then. I go in around Beaver and Stueben. Good luck to you man.

I drew a 1st season cow tag. :D Going to set up on a nice little vantage point that provides a cross canyon shot to a regular cow crossing. There's a bear den nearby so then will get an OTC bear tag and wait for the bear to show up! gun)

Also get to hunt archery on the either sex OTC tag.

And yes, the counting of days has begun, and the hunt specific workouts have kicked into high gear.

Good luck to all.

Timber is your 1st season cow tag private land only? Just curious how you managed that tag and a either sex archery tag?

Colorado has A, B and C type tags available for each big game species. You can only have 1 A-type tag and 1 B-type tag... or two B-type tags. You can get as many C-type tags as you want, but are typically for private property and are very rare, I think in only one or two units across the entire state.

Any bull tag (bull only or either sex) is always considered an A-type tag. A cow tag in almost all instances is considered a B-type tag. So although a draw rifle tag, my cow tag is a B-type, which then leaves my A-type open for the OTC archery either sex tag.

And although I can use my OTC either sex archery in any of the designated units across the state, I will be going to the same unit where I drew my 1st season rifle cow tag... all of which is public property.

Me and my brother both drew our 3rd choice which was a 2nd season cow tag in unit 70 and I called the DOW to make sure we could still hunt OTC archery and she told me not unless my cow tag was private land only. So now im confused as to what I can or cant get

Check the draw code in the hunting brochure for your 3rd choice 2nd season tag. It will tell you whether it not it's an A type or B type. Worst case, even if your tag is an A type, you can still get an OTC archery cow tag.

A while back any draw tag was an A type even if it was a cow... but they have changed that. Most all cow tags are now B type tags. Most DOW officers are helpful but some do not keep up with the changes in te regs.
