Having lived in Oregon for 50 years now, I have seen this state turned into Orefornia. The governor is a *** liberal, and doing her best to finish flushing this once great state.
If it weren't for family issues, there is 0 chance I'd stay here. I wish you the best of luck in your search. Maybe, after the next civil war, there will be some new and improved states out west......

To the OP, I feel ya, Brother! I'm a California guy born and bred; my wife has lived her entire life here as well. We feel that voting is not only a duty but a privilege and we vote in every election but we are throwing in the towel. I recently retired after 40+ years in aerospace and the wife will retire towards the end of the year. We earned a good living and saved as much as we could to supplement our SS but even so we can't afford to stay in California. Crazy high property taxes, insurance, vehicle registration and fuel on top of the ignorant, immoral and borderline criminal politics in this state have made the decision for us. We are looking seriously at northeastern Alabama and Texas.

Hello, as my handle reflects I am a Wyoming guy. Born, raised, and stayed here for 65 years. I retired from law enforcement last year after serving for 32 years. My area of operation, Fremont County has been a kind of refuge for retired Leo's for years. The place is changing but it is still the only place I want to be. The most common complaint I hear about transplants is that they are fleeing where they are from because of what it is or become but then try to make the new place what they just left. I can't tell you how many times in my career I heard, "Well back in California what they are doing is a violation of this code or that code. " A big part of what has made us who we are is a self sufficient attitude and a desire for the least amount of regulation not more. Now for the bad, our area is some of the finest rock climbing and backcountry hiking in the world. The politics is rapidly converting to a much more liberal mentality by those young people moving here to enjoy those venues. All the above said, give Wyoming a thought and if you choose us, welcome brother.

I retired from law enforcement in Los Angeles. Trying to figure out which western state to move to. I am looking at Idaho, Montana, Utah, or possibly Wyoming. I need to be close to elk and mule deer. Lived in California my whole life and can't wait to leave. High taxes , too crowded, ------ gun laws , and too ---- liberal.

The Bighorn basin of North-Central Wyoming. (I live in Hyattville near the Bighorn Mtns.) There are only 600,000 people in the whole state! - The Freedom grows on you.
I left Southern California back in 1992 when i was 32, and joined my Dad in fishing and hunting. - Got my CDL to drive truck and never looked back - just visit California every now n then. - don't miss the traffic! - Way cheaper to live in Wyoming too - if you can handle the weather - I adapted. - The lowest point in Wyoming is 3100-ft.
And, for what you pay for a house in California, you can spend half for the same quality house n bank the rest.

Come on over to the White Mountains of Arizona . Lots of elbow room left, still have very high 2A thoughts.
Overall we have laws in place at the state level that will keep anti 2A and other non western lovers from changing us at the local levels of govt.

Don't get me wrong, I'm as much to blame as anyone else. I'm not a native Idahoan. I found myself in Idaho as my last duty station and decided that I'd never leave. With that, I've only been here 10 years and have witnessed the damage of California (and Washington and Oregon if we are talking about hunting impact for non-res hunters in the mountains). About half of my time at work is spent vetting candidates and interviewing, most of the people we attract to our company are good folks like you guys (construction people tend to swing the "right way").
With that, the sheer volume of people from Cali that I interview is certainly just a small percentage of the total Californians that are flocking here.
My Wife and used to enjoy date nights downtown before we had kids 7 years ago. We went out last weekend on maybe the first really nice Spring Saturday and it was appalling, Boise just oozes liberalism now. I felt uncomfortable.
The housing market is beyond frustrating, if you have owned a house in Idaho for more than 3 years here you can't afford to move. Californians are cashing out their overvalued homes and paying cash for nice big houses on 1/2 acre lots with views (which are being built in the foothills that our mule deer desperately need for wintering grounds.... and nobody is saying anything about).
As I said, I didn't grow up here, but as has been said before, I don't think anywhere is safe. They don't just control the cities and the votes, their money buys up all of the mountain towns and hobby farms too. Goodbye to quail hunting, goodbye to retirement/escape options for folks that can't stand the thought of dwelling in close proximity to the offenders.
The last thing I want is more competition in the mountains, but the truth is that we are seeing more people in the mountains despite our personal wishes, I'd rather share the mountains with folks like you that vote as I vote. We can at least agree to get along and pull in the same direction.

I moved to Idaho 4 years ago... I kinda feel like I showed up too late, the cost of living is exploding. Never experienced anything like it. Oh well, still a great place to live!

Wife and I left CA in 2010. 5 years later, after moving to Virginia, we started getting harassed by CA auditors for 'unpaid' vehicle registrations - to the tune of almost $50K! They were nasty and aggressive. I'm just a big government-hating A**Hole so I dug in and took them on - and won!

Sold 2 businesses in 1 year and had the time window to become a Wyoming resident in Cheyenne. 2 years later the State Of Virginia came after us for unpaid capital gains - same attitude as CA. I had expected that (based on my CA experience), so my documentation was gold plated. We won again!

We absolutely love it here. No need for carry permits - concealed or open. Great hunting and good honest people. Oh - and no state income tax, 6% sales tax, no sales tax on food. Libs are generally unwelcome. 15 years ago WY had a Dem. governor. He was so conservative he would have made Reagan blush!
WY is the 10th largest state in area and has the lowest population of all 50 states - less than 700,000. There are 3 times more cows than people!
All of you who are reading this are welcome - just don't bring your Blue State politics with you!
PS: If any of you are leaving a Big Blue State be forewarned- they don't want you to take your (their!) money with you. Pay attention - they Will come after you. Study up - this is serious!

Oh yeah - did I mention that most our Interstate Highway speed limits are 80 mph?

SC is pretty Red, cheap too. The upstate where I live gets pretty good elevation. We call it the dark corner. Limited to white tails and pigs. But there are lots of them and the deer limit is generous. I put 5-7 in the freezer every year. There is a lot of public land. Greenville is a really cool town. North Alabama is Very similar. Appalachian foot hills. No true long range hunting really though.
