The 300 ultra mag with 165 accubonds aren't no slouch either. Shot head on after calling in. I normally don't kill smaller bears …..but my buddy's wife was harassing me about a skin for years. Si, had it tanned and gave to her..

Never really bought into the "overkill" thoghts…..but, have seen the results of bullets "overreacting" to high velocity! memtb

A 30-06, any of the 300 Mags, or if you like big bore a 45-70 would all be good choices. Just watch out for recoil on the last one.

The 45-70 with a 400 grain bullet kills every bit as good at 1400 fps as it does at 2000 fps, and they have very little recoil. In fact slightly less recoil than a 30-06.

"Prexactly"! But, then higher velocity does make the longer shots a bit easier without the need for a range finder and you have that 1400 fps farther downrange!

And, why step down to 400's anyway? memtb

Here in the Midwest we shoot bears at close range, many at spitting distance. I've shot bears with everything from 7mm to 50 B&M even 12 ga. slugs. Personally I like a big hole going in and a big hole going out, tracking can be very difficult and a bears hair can hold a lot of blood before it can be released on the ground. All are bears are shot in very heavy cover we talk about feet not yards how far they are from a shooter.

Exactly why I snot my cannons here in the west . Downed timber is horrible to to recover an animal. As you know bears are like Mercury, they ooze into a depression or hole. Like loading jello when you put on truck bed. 2 holes!!! Yes sir!
