Ok, I have to say it's about **** time this caliber was recognized a viable long range alternative! When I was in junior high, I read and article in Guns & Ammo about Ross Seyfried's idea of the perfect one gun arsenal. His ideal was a .340 Weatherby. His reasoning was that in a pinch it could be used at either end of the spectrum; light game and in some places where legal for dangerous game. I bought that, but a .340 Weatherby was way out of my price range in junior high. So I started researching, reading, and digging. I came across the write up in the Llyman handbook about loading the 8mm RM, and I was hooked. Almost .340 energy, but something I could maybe afford someday. The I read an article Craig Boddington wrote about the round in G&A. As I get older I don't agree with everything he says, but then to me he was as much of a gun god as Elmer. The 8mm RM was his holy grail. I got my first one when I was about 21. My parents made a bunch of money selling a house and graciously passed the wealth. Quickly I found that factory loading sucked; much like throwing a brick off a building. But I guessed it would be that way; I paid $10 a box to the guy at the gun counter at Longs Drugs for 3 boxes that I'd seen sitting there for 2 years. Early on factory 8mm RM loads were strictly used for fire formed brass. (Good luck finding a box of factory for under $75 now.) I had been using Sierra GKs in my 7MM RM for a while, and wouldn't you know it the 220Gr 8mm GKs had an awesome BC. 5 something off the top of my head. I used the max load that Sierra said was safe, 79.5Gr of H4831 (Grandpa was a big proponent of surplus powder). ****. Kicked like a mule. 1/2 in groups at 100 yards. I could easily hit the 500 yard gong at the range. I was sold. I took a buddy out shooting one time and brought the 8 mag. He was impressed, and bruised. I remember sometime later he was talking to a friend who was spouting off about 9mm stuff. My friend said "Well, he's got an 8 Mag" Other guy says well 9mm is bigger. My friend said "you have no idea." Ignorance. In any case I learned a lot over the years. 1. Don't shoot antelope sized game with an 8 Mag and 200Gr Partitions. I shot one front to back at about 400 yards and there was one little hole going in and one little hole going out the back end. 2. Sierra GKs are absolutely devastating. The most memorable kill was a 300lb + Muley buck at about 300 yards. Absolutely flattened. The 8mm Rem Mag is my go to rifle for any hunt. It will do small, and it will do big. Widley makes a 250Gr solid that I stick in the bottom of my magazine just in case. I bought a 30" finish Lilja factory contour bbl that this winter I'm going to screw onto a remmy factory action and make an international rifle. It's going all over the world with me. I'm hoping for around 3000Fps with the 220Gr SGKs. But in any case I know I will "Have enough gun." Hicks
