I think the biggest thing holding the 7-08 back is its age and lack of cool factor modern marketing has afforded the CM. For a mid range hunting cartridge its statistically hard to beat when considering the spectrum of what makes a good cartridge. I've had one for 5+ years as well as a .260, taken multiple whitetail with both. Heavy lean for me to the 7-08. The 7-08 enjoys tremendous barrel life Lapua brass along with all the other top brands Ridiculously broad bullet selection Effectively uses a broad range of proven powders After trying all the whiz bang expensive bullets, I settled on the tried and true Nosler 150gr Ballistic Tip Hunting. I can reliably take it to 1000yds on steel and feel very confident in a hunting situation to about half that distance. At 7-08 speeds the 150 NBT has really shined for me. I know its not scientific and likely just a run of luck, but multiple whitetail have all been DRT from this gun. All have been complete pass through with significant internal damage.
