I have a 300 RUM with a 26” Proof Research Barrel. I also use an 8” TBAC suppressor which typically adds about 50fps. I shoot a 230 grain Berger Target Hybrid bullet 2955 fps. This is my hunting rifle and use it to shoot steel out to 2km. This fall, harvested a cow elk at 650 yards and an antelope at 780 yards, both with the 300 RUM. My recommendation with the 300 RUM is to use the heaviest bullet as possible (I ❤️ My 300RUM). I’ve shot the lighter bullets mentioned above and have lots of Berger bullets (500 180 gr VLDs still in unopened boxes for sale if anyone is interested!). The lighter bullets go faster but just don’t perform as well past 1000 yards. The 230 gr Berger Target Hybrid bullet kills on impact and performs almost as well as my 300 gr Berger Tagert Hybrid. The 230 gr bullet is a truly remarkable bullet. The 300 RUM has lots of case capacity to push big heavy bullets at close to 3000 fps. There is really no reason to get a 300 RUM unless you are going to use a 230 gr bullet at 3000 fps you need a longer barrel. The performance really errodes when the muzzle velocity drops below 2800 fps. The increase in performance more than justifies the small increase in weight caused by 2” of barrel. If you really want to reduce weight, get a proof research barrel (1:9 twist for 230 gr bullet). If you don’t want the extra weight and not interested in ranges beyond 700 yards, get a smaller caliber.
