I haven’t really figured out the hammers. What velocity is necessary for optimal performance and what is the minimum recommended velocity? We had a 7mm 177 hammer hunter go through a big buck just behind the shoulder at 540 yards and it went through so fast it made a dust cloud on the hill. The buck stumbled a couple of times and ran off like nothing happened. Watching the video several times it looked like a double lung shot. No blood, searched an entire day for it. The second was at 400 yards and he hit in front of the rear quarter with the same dust on the hill from the pass through. This time he clipped the aorta but left a dime sized hole in and a nickel out. Maybe a 177gr from a 7mm WSM was too heavy, could only get them up to 2890 before heavy bolt lift (26” 1:8 twist barrel). Would appreciate some thought on the experience we had with hammers and what may have improved the outcome. I know many have great success using them and respect their comments. I would love to make them work but with the longer shots we take (seldom less than 500 yd) it may not be in the cards. This is the one that clipped the aorta. 13 yo grandson was quite pleased with his kaibab muley. 198.25”
