I got out today for the first time of the year.
I went 3 for 3 but nothing too impressive, it's hard to get many shots on this farm over 300 yards.These were only about 150ish. Rain was on the way so only spent two hours. Using the Swift with custom 57 grain hpbt.

Howdy, seen this guy snooping around this weekend, he even stuck around long enough for me to grab my Marlin model 917VS in .17H.M.R. used 20gr JSP Gamepoint. He let everyone know within a half mile he was hit and did the does- se- doe for a couple seconds, laid down raised his tail- done. 100yrd shot. Hadn't heard and seen that in a while. Great way to start 2023 varmint season.

I started predator/varmint hunting at age 7 with a trusty 22LR rifle with no scope and graduated to a scope by age 9 on our Illinois farm. That continued until age 14 when my interests turned to bigger game but my hunting skills were pretty well developed by then.

It's a great beginning to a life long sport to start a boy (or girl) out hunting at a young age.

Other than my dad, I am the only hunter in my family and extended family though. Too bad...

Some of the best times in my life were stalking chicken killing foxes and coons.

Groundhogs were never safe around our farm or any of the nearby farms when I was called upon to eliminate those pesky critters.

Growing tired of lugging around 14 pound monsters, I decided a few years ago that I wanted a lightweight varmint rifle for anything from ground hogs to coyotes. I decided on a Cooper Jackson Game, 12 twist 26" barrel and upgraded wood. I could have chosen just about any cartridge but the mighty Swift was a no brainer for me. It's a joy to have in the field even on days with no action.

First Chuck of the year for me, yesterday. First kill with a new 25x45 I'm starting to do some load work for. Also, first kill with a suppressor. Only about 100 yards.

I too killed my 1st 2023 groundhog this week. Close range using Federal Quiet, Low-velocity, Roundnose .22. Once between the eyes sent her to hog heaven. (Around here just one seems to quickly turn into many)
