Thor, my Karelian Bear Dog, will be turning 17 years old in October. He still follows me around and wakes up with me at 0230. He does a lot of sleeping these days, but deserves it and we are trying to enjoy life to the fullest together. I know I am not alone here. Cheers!

Some videos of him from years ago.

First evening in the house at 7 weeks old playing with my youngest son in 2009.

You can't see it on the video, but he was harassing the geese. 🤣

This is one of his favorite parts of the trail. He was trying to flush pheasants. This was also the same spot where he earned his quill of shame. 😍

At the dog park.

I'm still checking, but it seems that you are the only guy I know who has one of those!
Yes, Sir, there are not many of them here, and most are being used in wildlife bear and mountain lion conflicts/management. The Karelian Bear Dog (KBDs) were initially bred to hunt bears in the Karelian Peninsula of Finland. I saw a video of their field trials with an actual brown bear (now illegal in Europe and all videos removed from the Internet), and was fascinated by this primitive breed. I got even more interested when I ran into the excellent work by Biologist Carrie Hunt and the Wind River Bear Institute (https://beardogs.org/).
