My dad (1920-1981) used tell about the neighborhood farmers (40 to 80 acre truck farms) would get together and burn off huge swaths of farmland! Pastures, wooded areas and crop land!
In the wooded areas, the understory, briars and smaller trees burned out, leaving the established timber room for growth. It also reduced parasites! Fleas, chiggers and ticks!
Burned over pastureland ALWAYS came back thicker and greener!
Cropland always improved with the added ash!
He also told that he and his brother could earn a dime (a nickel each) if they would help push cattle through the community dipping vat!
As the small family farms closed down and sold off, the controlled burns stopped. The Gov't banned dipping vats and the fleas, ticks and chiggers came roaring back.
A "perfect" solution? Maybe not, but that was the "technology" (?) of the day!
....AND IT WORKED!
