7 mag brass problem

As you can see there is a pronounced ring just above the belt. If I adjust the die to remove it the shoulder gets bumped .005-.006. I have read that is way too much. Solutions please? I'm about ready to pull this barrel & replace it with a non belted caliber!!! Thanks. BW

The problem is in your Schell plate. It's either something in the plate it self or the alignment of the base. Other than that you my have a swollen chamber. Check your brass to see if that is the case. If so rebarrel in a different caliber, or back in the 7mm rem mag. Hope this helps! Jared

Head Space, Head Space, Head Space, Head Space!
I agree. Looks like a head space issue. I had a similar problem with a savage 110 7mm RM headspacing off no and go gauges. I had to adjust the headspace off the shoulder using tape on a one fired brass to resolve it. It looks like excessive headspace is stretching the brass then when the die pushes it back it's piling up at the belt. The belt is not needed and the go/no gauges set the spacing off the belt. It would be interesting to see if the bolt would close on a once fired piece of brass with two layers of scotch tape on it. If it does it would make me think you have excessive headspace.

You might look at this web page for a belted magnum collett die from Innovative Technologies. Addresses the bulging problem just above the magnum belt. Lots of information also on that issue. I'm as the others. Never had that problem with 7RM or 7STW. But apparently it exists.

I have seen this and what caused on the brass that I saw was excessive headspace .how many times has the brass been fired and how much you are working the brass can cause that if you are over sizing the brass .another words sizing it to much and it then has a greater distance to form to the chamber . I bumb size all my brass now to work it as little as possible. Now not all brass is created equal . What kind of brass are you useing.some brass is thicker and some have differs lengths.i have used Norma noslar Hornady and Remington and I have noticed differences in ever one.there are many videos on bumpsizing brass on youtube and you use your full length dies to do so very simple and more accurate.

I to have loaded a lot of 7 RM over the years and I had an issue back in the Late 1970's with Factory brass being out of round . Do not remember the brand , I only found this by sacrificing a piece of Brass and cutting it into at the area where the issue or ring was and measured the wall thickness . There was a major difference in that group of Brass I had and I sorted out the bad ones and discarded them so me or someone else would not run across them again. I don't know if that is your problem but it might be a place to look . I have been a Machinist for 37 years now , so sometimes I think outside the box . Hope this helps ! Might try someone elses dies if you have a friend that has

Definetly it is the die0r the press or both, Ive loaded 7Rem-Mag since 1972 I would not be afraid to say 3000 to 4000 rounds and some hot ones never saw an issue like that where did you find the press

7 pages and not to my knowledge has anyone contacted Larry despite repeated offers. Amazing.
Agreed, I would like to know if the OP got this resolved and what the issue and fix was. 7 pages of suggestions, but not sure what is correct. It would be nice to know for future reference.

So far so good. I tried an RCBS die & a new Forster die. Neither one shaved the brass off. I have been using the same brass & just neck sizing & bumping shoulders .002 just for test purposes. 5 firings & still working. Only had one that needed fl sizing. My assumption is it was the die. I will be changing brass to R-P soon. Hope it will not give me the same problem.
