I’m shooting a Weatherby Vanguard in 6.5 creedmoor with a Swarovski Z5 3.5-18x44 with a brx reticle. This rifle is for my 12 year old so I’m setting it up for MPBR at the moment with the expectation he won’t shoot at an animal past 200 yards. As he develops as shooter I want to teach him to use...
if you saw the thread about my father's neck you may already know but we ended up getting him a 6.5 creedmoor. My 12 year old shoots one and it's a great round for sensitive recoil scenarios and whitetail out to 300 for us.
*I'm really only adding to this to keep the thread going.
Not to rub it in but we just drive the truck to it....but we are in Virginia so the land we hunt is a bit different. Flip side is the land you guys hunt and variety of game is much better than ours.
Indeed. We don’t reload but we will make sure to burn up some factory stuff figuring out what it likes and then getting to learn the rifles capabilities. Can’t wait. He can’t either.
Alright. Cleared to shoot and not lift more than 50lbs. Treatment is some shots in the neck and some pill to help pain. Time is the healing plan for now.
So after discussions with me based on my thoughts, input from this thread, and his dr’s input on recoil tolerance he’s gone the 6.5 route...
appreciate all the input guys. he has an appointment today with his specialist and we will know more on limitations after that. Luckily his specialist is a huge big game hunter and understands the importance of the need to hunt...... so time will tell. Keep the ideas rolling.
Update - I advised him that first and foremost he needed to shoulder his three current rifles and see which felt the best to him just to shoulder. Fit is everything as we all know then recoil. Certainly he would notice fit issues more now with his current neck pain.
LMT AR10 in 308: He...
Glad we already have our suppressors, AR's, and other toys bc our wonderful black faced party animal Gov. held his anti-2nd post shooting press conference calling for red flag laws, suppressor bans, ar bans, etc. etc. you know.... all the common sense stuff.
This is just an aside....not to...
Just spoke with him about this option. He’s going to discuss with his dr some things ie weight limit for carrying (anything not just a gun), c3 vertebrae vulnerability in general as there’s some rubbing on the spinal cord, etc. and if he’s cleared to shoot he’s going to go the 6.5 route...
yessir. funny i mention he has a 2nd unused LMT one post after saying he's more responsible with his $ than I am. hahah. In that platform he can use 6.5/.243/7-08.....decisions decisions......

No adjustable gas block on the LMT. Gives me a reason to shoot it and see.
He, ironically enough has another LMT that he's never shot. He could put a different barrel in it just for fun to have another round. Just remembered that. Long story there.
He's more responsible than I am about spending $. He's thinking about sticking with the LMT as you noted or using my model 70 .243 that I don't use anymore. I bet you he'll go with the LMT. Wonder if the AR10 will cycle reduced recoil loads. May have to try a couple and see.
My father is having some neck issues that he's currently working through with his doctors. C3 / 5&6 are being a real pain in the ***. Not unusual for a 69 year old guy. His pain at the moment would certainly prevent him from shooting heavy kick rifles. They're going the steroid shot route...
