If you could design a cartridge from scratch

A 308 Norma without the belt and with a 35 deg. shoulder angle.

Those case belts are an old artifact from the H&H days 100+ years ago. Not needed for proper head spacing just like the move away from rimmed cartridges. Probably the best 30-338 type would be the .308 Norma w/o the belt & with a steeper shoulder angle My .02

    What’s your favorite cartridge?

Rifle = 6.5CM, and most 6.5mm cartridges. Also, really like the 6mm CM. Handgun = 10mm, and 38 Super/9x23 Winchester, although I don't shoot them much. So, shooting wise the 9mm & 10mm. Have several others but they're old cartridges that have fallen out of favor and arms chambered for them...

Whats the cartridge you LOVE to HATE?

I don't own/use any cartridge (rifle/handgun) that I hate. That being said I really like my several 6.5CMs (various configurations) getting the first one in 2010 with a custom build. Because of the inherent accuracy of the 6.5 CM, as well as the new advanced bullet tech it's my main big game...

    YOUR favorite .30/.338 cartridge

YOUR favorite .30/.338 cartridge Well, the best of both worlds - The .30-.338 Win. Mag Wildcat. Although I wish it didn't have a belt. My .02

    Elk Hunt MT GMU 100

To be aware, GMU 100 is also in a grizzly bear area, and there have been some large wildfires north of Troy.

    Darn Non-Resident Hunters?!?

There are no differences on how federal (Bur of Land Mgt & USFS) wilderness areas are managed regarding cattle grazing, as per LRNuts statement. Cattle leases are issued by BLM and the National Forest Service, not fish and game departments. Additionally, you cannot get a permit to graze in a...

    Darn Non-Resident Hunters?!?

bikerbowhunter said: Even "public wilderness areas" out west are over run with cattle from privileged ranchers and outfitters who pay the game commissions. Patently false. LRNuts' 1st paragraph reply is spot on.

    Darn Non-Resident Hunters?!?

There are both non-resident & Resident idiots.

#1 - They don't, and #2 - Strap yourself in for a wild ride. They have their place in summer backpacking but IMO not well for a fall/winter hunting camp in the Rockies. But maybe they're fine back east. My .02

IMO too many folks nowadays rely on their electronics to help them get around once they wake up in the morning. A good old USGS 7.5 min quad topo map(s) will tell you more about the country around you vs. a tiny screen, and an old fashioned compass won;t have batteries die on you. My .02

    Idaho hunt

It's always been that way. There is no handicapped waiver. I carry a plastic skid when I'm in non-wilderness in order for me to either move the animal over snow better to get it out or drag some extra out besides what I have on my back. In wilderness you either cut it up/bone it out and pack...

I also carry a firearm (handgun) (see above) but don't rely on it as my only means of defense. To each his/her own.

I carry one of those plus bear spray.
