    Tools for quartering elk

For the way that we do moose a saw is required, while the moose is hanging by the hind legs we split it right down the middle of the spine. Once the moose is split into 2 pieces separate the front from the rear of each half, four large pieces of moose. Not everyone can handle such large pieces...

    The Facebook crazies

Heard at a gun shop; Customer: "I want a 338 Lapua." Owner: "What kind of a rifle did you have in mind?" Customer: "I want a 338 Lapua." Owner: "Yes, but what brand of rifle did you did you want for your 338 Lapua ?" Customer: " I want a 338 Lapua." Owner: "I think we're done here." Gus

2017 Hunt Report and Meat Pole Contest - Win a $300 or $100 Gift Certificate

Accidental Moose 2017 Moose season 2017 started out like most of the rest of our annual moose hunts, not quite ready when we wanted. We try to be in moose camp before opening day but it seems like most years we don't have everything done that we had planned on getting done and this year was...

    Moose/Caribou dilemma?

Some people prefer caribou over moose, could be as simple as that. I prefer moose and one moose is enough for my family.

Meat care in the back counrty

We have meat poles about 15' in the air and getting quarters as high as we can we still have griz getting into the meat. We hang the meat without any covering (game bags) because we've found that it keeps moisture next to the meat and causes spoilage. We have hung meat like this for more than 3...

    .338-378 Wby or .338 Lapua

That is the first time that I have heard someone say that the action wasn't strong enough for a 3000 fps 300 grain bullet. Gus

    .338-378 Wby or .338 Lapua

I've got a 338-378 Accumark and I've pushed 300 gr SMKs a little over 3000 but that was hard on brass (imagine that) using RL 33. I'm still going around 2950 and brass is living longer. Gus

Yes grizzlies do climb trees, they're a little harder to see than the daylight pics but you can definitely see the 2 cubs in this pic. One is up the tree and the other is at the base of the tree to the left. The ropes were strong enough to support the weight of the meat and the bear so we didn't...

Our meat poles are over 15' in the air, we had at least 5 different grizzlies coming in to the meat poles. The meat hanging on the poles in that pic is 4 moose quarters. We also got video of a wolverine that year. Gus

    Kodiak brown bear rifle

Big bears are incredibly fast, I had to go into the alders after a wounded griz that was hit with a 270, his back up had a 458 already shouldered and didn't have time to get off a shot. This bear was finally dead after being hit by a 270 at least once, a 458 and a 375 H&H. I've never been a fan...

Advice on Moose Loads and Bullets

Good choice for the rifle and a lot of good comments on bullet selection, one more thing that I would consider that no one has mentioned is that there are other critters to consider. If you're hunting in Alaska you're hunting in bear country. While the chances of needing to use your rifle to...

Is an illuminated reticle worth it?

Where I hunt there is no time that is legal for hunting all that matters is that you are only using available light. The low light situations where the shadows are getting pretty dark an illuminated reticle is a handy thing to have. Gus
