Loading data for Barnes TXS (.306/168gr)

I agree with m14. If you start from the minimum loads in your reloading book you should be fine. My loads with the triple shocks ended up being pretty close to the same loads I shoot with the Nosler Partitions. Good luck with the triple shocks they have been very accurate for me in all the guns...

    Lightweight Bipods

Snipe-pod, makes a very lightweight bi-pod. Do a search and you should come up with their website. Make by Kramer Designs I believe. I have one. Positives are they are very light and carry on a belt pouch. 8oz complete I believe. Easy to attach to the clip that is mounted on your sling stud...

    168 or 180gr bullets

I would skip the XLC and go to the 168 grain triple shocks. You will probably have better luck with them accuracy wise. I can load them safely (max load) to 3400fps in my 26" 300 win mag using I4831 powder and groups are consistently under 1/2" for 3 shots. With the weight retention of the...

elk hunting with 200 grain SMKs

Have you tried the Barnes Tripleshocks? People are getting excellent accuracy with them and a much better choice for elk at the ranges you are discussing.

Any Elk hunting advice or tips for me??

Spent lots of years hunting elk in Idaho without much success. Every year I would listed to my brother in law tell me about how he shot his elk and the method he used. I thought he was full of it but could not argue with his success. So I thought what the heck and tried it. He goes to a thick...

    Lubalox and other cleaning questions

Jon There seem to be as many different cleaning methods as there are guys cleaning rifles. Everybody seems to have their own way of doing it. Some guys are way more concerned with getting their barrels "really clean" than others. Some guys are willing to spend a lot of time and do a lot of...

    Long range elk hunting surprise.

appreciate the responses. That was quite a morning. Thanks for relaying some of your experiences as well. Always fun to read others hunting stories. Anybody else have some good ones? CoBrad, I was shooting my H-S Precision .300 Win Mag with 180gr Nosler Partitions. I killed the bull with the...

    Long range elk hunting surprise.

Opening day of Idaho elk season 2002 I was hiking down a ridge 2,000 vertical feet to get into position at the end of a ridge from where I could set up to watch the opposite ridge for elk. This opposite ridge was a large basin which had been partially burned a few years earlier and a place where...

    H-S Precision

I have a H-S Precision Pro-Hunter. .300 win mag. It shoots several hunting bullets into 3 shot groups of under 1/2". Very nice rifle, great trigger. People at the company are nice to work with also. Good value for the money.

    Carry Zero

In the past I have carried my rifles 0 at 300 yards. I hunt a lot of open country. Works great on longer shots but has hurt me on some shorter shots as the mid range trajectory was too high. I have learned the hard way and now my carry 0 is set at 200 yards, works much better all around for me...

    300 winmag help

For hunting accuracy try the 165gr Nosler Ballistic tips with 79gr H-4831, 3430fps.(not great for shorter ranges at high velocity). For more controlled expansion try the Barnes 168gr triple shocks with I-4831 can't remember the grains of powder on that one don't have my book here, at 3390fps...

What motivated me to form LongRangeHunting.com

Great story. Many of here can understand where you are coming from. Unfortunately the world is full of people who are satisfied with their own mediocrity. These are the naysayers who jump on the bandwagon to criticise others who have put in the time and effort to excell at their chosen...
