There was a time when PRS guys were all buying FGMM .308 because it was cheaper than their cost+time in reloading and just as accurate as anything they could load. Off the shelf ammo can be great these days.

Basically this. Chrome lining involves intentionally roughing the bore, so it takes extra special care to do it and keep a barrel a tight shooter. FN has a reputation for doing it well, so does Criterion.
Get an 5.56 AR with a barrel between 10.3" and 16" long, a bright weapon mounted light, a decent red dot, and some quality expanding ammunition and you have the best (indoor) home defense weapon you could ask for.
