    There’s something about a .308 Win and 168 SMKs

I shot "across the course" as well as long range competition to 1,000 yards using several different .308 rifles. If your rifle would not produce excellent groups and scores with the 168 gr. SMK at 2.80" COL, 40gr. to 41 gr. H4895 in LC Match brass it was time to rebarrel and/or rebed. I still...

    Help with 308 load

One responder mentioned paralax. I've tested a lot of fixed parallax scopes and some have a lot of reticle movement at 100 yards. You can minimize the effect by moving your eye back from the scope and centering the light circle in the ocular lens before each shot. Or, if you have access to an...

    What would you do?

The 300 Wby had done very well over the years in 1,000 yard benchrest matches.

Help me decide which 22LR bolt action

I bought a Ruger American Rimfire last summer after shooting a friend's rifle. Both his and mine are very accurate for production hunting / field rifles. -Ed

    barrel lengths per cartridge decisions

Last year I built a .260 Remington on a M700 short action for whitetail deer hunting - primarily from tree stands. I couldn't decide between 22" and 24" barrel length so I split the difference and cut it to 23" finished length. That's my "odd length" story and it's true. -Ed

    Bear Rifle Optic Suggestions

I'll second MagnumMania c's recommendation. Over 60 years of big game hunting, I've tried most brands of scopes. I now have 6 Leup 3.5-10x40s on various rifles. If all of your hunting was in deep woods, I'd suggest it's little brother, the 1.5-5x20 for its even wider field of view. -Ed

Why you should consider a 223 for a LR rifle

I have two .223AI and several .223s with both Match and SAAMI chambering. The biggest difference is the AI version requires much less FL sizing. Yes, the AI does have more internal volume, but the standard .223 does fine to 1,000 yards with the right bullets and loads. -Ed

    Best method to measure headspace?

I must respectfully disagree with MagnumMania regarding the RCBS Precision Mic. Even the readings on the same case will vary depending on how you screw it together on the brass. In addition, the headspace length markings appear not to be related to SAAMI specifications. I've been reloading...

    308 Win, 185VLD??

When I was competing with the M1A, I shot a lot of the Berger 185VLDs at 600 - 1,000 yards. My load was 41 grains of 2520 powder, WLR, in LC Match brass. The Bergers were seated long to minimize jump and they were single loaded. This was very accurate in my rifle, but please don't assume that...

Investigation: talley screws too soft or receiver 's problem?

I too had a base screw problem with Talley mounts. I had two screws sheer off on two different M700s, a 7-08 and a .308 so no great recoil issue. Called Talley and they immediately offered to send me new screws (which they did). But I asked if the new screws would be from a different supplier...

Sako s20 Question Re Magazine Length vs COAL

Mikecr: This may apply for a new rifle, but do you then recommend ignoring the erosion of the lands? Do a fresh OTL as the lands erode? Modify the action/magazine again? What's your approach? Thanks, Ed
