I'll vote for the 7mm-08. Its like a 308 but faster! I love my 7mag but the recoil sucks. If you feel the need for a .30 cal bullet I think the 30 Nosler is a good choice too.

I would start by coloring the round with a black sharpie, try to close the bolt, then remove the round from the chamber and inspect the case to see where ink has been scuffed off, that should tell you where to start.
