After you create your measuring line, you can change it from a linear path (absolute) or clamped to ground. By right clicking your saved line, you can bring up properties. Also, you can use the elevation profile to find distance at certain points and also the slope.

I'm not sure how you'd increase transparency using this method. But if you don't mind trying another program, you might try Caltopo.com. It's pretty easy to use. Just select the 'Land Management' layer to add public lands.

For Android, in my opinion, the best app for this is Backcountry Navigator. You can download that same map formats as shown in my post above (there's probably close to a dozen map layers to chose from), plus you can download the public land boundaries (although this app doesn't show land owner...
