Nice. I'm in the LA area, but have driven through Salinas many times to and from undergrad in the Bay area. If you're in Salinas again, Salinas BBQ is one of the best BBQ places I've found in CA.

I'll cheat. How about one gun in multiple calibers (a switch barrel, either Savage, AI, or custom action)? That way, you don't have to choose, just get barrels in whatever caliber/profile/length combo you like. Though, I will say unless you're hunting blue whale, that 30-06 can probably handle...

Good advice about the hearing protection. Another option may be electronic hearing protection. I've been using Etymotic plugs for a few months and found they worked well. In the field they actually boost the sounds around you, so I forgot I had them in (until I took a shot). Only issue with them...
