7 STW and Winchester WMR powder

Victor3ranger, I wish you the best of luck. I found the 7mm STW to be a very challenging cartridge to load for, but I don't regret it at all. I learned a lot while playing around with the STW that has saved me a lot of time and frustration with other over bore cartridges. I finally shot the...

7 STW and Winchester WMR powder

A group of us fell down that rabbit hole years ago while looking for the perfect antelope rifle. We tried WMR, 780, 870, 8700 and got some eye popping velocities with 140 grain bullets. Despite the velocities we couldn't get any of the really slow powders to shoot accurately, and the velocity...

Inconsistent rifle due to recoil/muzzle climb

Agreed! I just picked up another 280AI from my gunsmith (my third). This one is built on a pre 64 action, 25", #3 Shilen barrel and was mounted in an older Brown Precision stock (I had lying around for God only knows how long). **** thing kicks like a mule because the stock is a straight design...

Torn between the 280 ai and the 7mm rem mag

I If you meant to ask if people are getting 2900fps (not 1900) with 180 gr bullets, I would say that is a lofty goal with a 280AI, I was only able to get 2825 fps with 160 gr Accubond's with a 26" barrel. I have reloaded both the 7mm RM and the 280AI a lot over the past 25 years and those are...

Torn between the 280 ai and the 7mm rem mag

As mentioned earlier: 55.0 gr, IMR 4350, 175 LRAB, COAL 3.520", MV 2689 fps using a Labradar Chronograph Not a super fast round but shoots well out to 1000 yards on paper, and works well on deer to 800 yards. I haven't had the opportunity to try it on elk yet, or anything else past 800 yards.

Torn between the 280 ai and the 7mm rem mag

Not by much, and not much bullet left in the case. I tried the 162gr ELD-X and got my best results (3/4 MOA) at 3.460" with 55.0 grs of H4831SC.

Torn between the 280 ai and the 7mm rem mag

It is, not much bullet left in the case, but that's where they like them. As a side note, I have run 150 gr LRAB's at 3.460" with great results. Neither of these rifles likes free bore, perhaps its the reamer I used when cutting the chamber, not sure. Even my old 160 gr Accubond loads seated at...

Seating depth on 7 mm rem ultra mag

I played with one of these when they were first introduced on the market and found mine to be finicky about seating depth. I started with the factory C.O.A.L and worked out .010" at a time until I found the sweet spot, it was exhausting though. As I recall I went through four powders (RL22...

Torn between the 280 ai and the 7mm rem mag

I have a pair of 280 AI's with 26" barrels (1 Shilen, 1 McGowen), 1:9 twist. I have moved away from 160 Accubond's to 175gr Nosler Long Range Accubond's now. Both shoot the 175 gr bullets between 1/2 and 5/8 moa. I went with the AI's years ago when I discovered after shooting a friend of mines...

What do you consider good enough?

This is entirely possible, in my 260 Remington, 142gr LR Accubonds shoot 3/4 - 7/8 MOA at 100 and then settle down around 300 yards and consitantly group at 1/2 MOA. I have been told that this is referred to a bullet “going to sleep”.

1st elk hunt need rifle advice

Here, here. I use a 338 win mag and 250gr Accubonds, nothing worse than chasing an elk through snags and blow down timber..

1st elk hunt need rifle advice

If you can handle the recoil, 300 Win Mag. Elk are tough animals and I personally use a 338 Win Mag with 250gr Accubonds. Then again, I hunt elk in NW Montana and there is nothing worse than an elk running after being shot and going down in blow down timer or snags. It makes an already hard job...

NEW 6.5 WIN. LONG RANGE MAGNUM!!!

Sadly I have not shot my 264 WM very much since H870 disappeared. I know there equivalent and slower burning powders out there but they just don't do what H870 did in my rifle, and I'm tired of spending money trying to achieve the same velocity/accuracy combination that H870 gave.

    My favorite caliber

I know I have written about this in other posts, but I went to the 280 AI and have never looked back. I still have lots of other rifles in the safe, but the 280 makes every trip with me no matter if its pigs, antelope, deer, or elk. 160 Gr Accubonds have a good B.C. and leave my barrel at...
