New Savage 110 Ultralite with Proof CF Barrels

They even threaded the muzzle so you can get the brake of your choice. I’ve got the older model in 7wsm. I think they just called it the “mountain rifle. Light weight and high operating pressure of the WSM make this rifle a thumper. It was just like getting hit in the shoulder with a rubber...

    Reducing Bolt Diameter

trying to turn .003" off of a diameter means 0.0015" per side. That's your depth of cut. I standard insert tool will have a tool nose radius of 0.005" at a minimum, which means using a cemented carbide tool that you have to grind yourself. If you have a lathe, just polish with crocus cloth...

Having issues getting the bolt to eject

You definitely have a primary extraction problem. The camming surfaces on the bolt lugs should move the bolt back about 0.040” or so. The extractor breaks the brass case out of the chamber and allows the case to be easily ejected. Either the cam surfaces or the groove on the extractor have way...

Recent grizzly attacks on Montana elk hunters

I have never been charged by a grizzly, but I have encountered them on several trips into the Yellowstone back country. I cannot believe that some at the beginning of this thread were talking about a 9mm!! A 10MM with hot loads is the minimum, guys, unless you want to end up bear kibble. The...

    Would you shoot this deer?

I’m not much for the Texas “brain” shot either. I shot a whitetail on a quartering away shot once-hit him too far back with a .284. Bullet went in just forward of the right ham and exited the left chest just in front of the leg. Lordy what a mess. Cut a while, puke a while. Would not do that to...

    270 Win ?

I never thought much about a 270 until a guy offered me a deal I couldn’t refuse. He brought me a used but nice River 77 in left hand, and said he wanted to sell it because the rifle “didn’t group”. I bought rifle, dies, brass for $300. After I spend 2 days cleaning out copper, the gun would...

Backcountry Camping Advice (YellowStone N.P., Grand Teton N.P., Glacier N.P.)

OK SAB, so I should have said "Firearms USE is prohibited in Yellowstone NP." Excuse me. The point is that if you use a firearm, even to protect yourself from a bear, you will go to jail. You will probably get in more trouble for killing the bear than is you shot someone who was trying to mug you.

Backcountry Camping Advice (YellowStone N.P., Grand Teton N.P., Glacier N.P.)

If you want a remote area without a lot of crowds, try the Shoshone Lake trail. Its in the southwest corner of Yellowstone, about 11 Miles in, and beautiful country. Firearms are forbidden in all National Parks, so definitely keep this plan to yourself. The pistol you are going to carry should...
