243 90gr Lapua Scenars - anyone use them on game?

Hello again after a long lay off from LRH Has anyone used these bullets on small to medium deer at normal hunting ranges? They shoot fantasticaly out of my 26" 9 twist Border cut rifled Sako. With the great BC I would like to use them but not if they pencil through, blow up or deviate...

    My Alpine Trip

Thanks for the comments - it was a great time. The last bite seems to be done in varying degrees. Apparently in some areas of Europe the game is treated in a very formalised way eg no stepping over the dead animal etc. Here it was simply a case of field cleaning the game and then cutting a...

    My Alpine Trip

Some of you may remember I hung around here a while ago prior to heading off to the Alps. A dedicated sub 300m hunter it was interesting to see the 'other side' The trip was to be in the Haute Alps in France in early November at the height of the rut. I was going with a Spanish friend who had...

Interested in some 6mm-06 performance experiences

Unfortunately Blaser have replied that 24" is the longest they can do which I think kills it. I guess 3325fps and a 6.5mm 100gr should do it out to what I need. Thanks for the help. One of these days I may rebarrel a #1 to 6mm06.

Interested in some 6mm-06 performance experiences

Do you think 26" is enough? I currently have a 6.5 barrel that is launching 100s at 3,325fps and would need an extra 200fps from the 6mm with 85/90s to make it worthwhile.

Interested in some 6mm-06 performance experiences

I am toying with the idea of a 6mm-06 slightly improved* in a 26" barrel lightweight for some very flat areas that I have roe stalking on. Interested in what muzzle velocities I can expect with 85-90gr bullets at sensible pressures. *The actual chambering is a 6x62Freres which has the...

    Shooting position

90% of my deer are shot standing. This is either due to obstructions such as crops etc or safety. You require a reasonably weighted rifle - around 8.5-9lbs with a mid range scope and a darn good trigger (2-2.5lb)and a set of shooting sticks. Best are garden poles secured 6" from top by a vacuum...

Range results... Load for Alaskan Moose hunt finalized!

I would trade a little accuracy for the sure fire knowledge that I could never leave bullet in the lands and get a mag full of powder. IMHO bullets in the lands has no place in a hunting rife ESPECIALY in a wilderness hunt of a lifetime trip.

    A-Max in 22-250 - hunting Roedeer

I seem to remember that Barnes don't like to be shot over conventional jacket copper fouling..... This is all 3rd hand but I have taken an interest as I am about to start loading Barnes myself, these will weigh an extra 200gr and be out of a 9.3x62!

    A-Max in 22-250 - hunting Roedeer

I wonder if that might be copper fouling - was it a group later in the string?

Sounds like you are on to a winner with the Barnes. I have heard that their accuracy can change between different lot #'s so it might not hurt to get a couple of boxes. Is it accurate (ie stable) at longer ranges?

Determing max range based on rifle accuracy

Sakovarmint, I presume you are talking about roe? As you say the issue is not killing power but accuracy. For heart and lung shooting you are looking to hit something the size of a CD cover. That being around a 4-5inch square. Given a group the size you displayed with the Barnes the limit is...

    22-BR bench-heavy varmint project

Oh I don't need to hear this - it had been put to the back of my head. Now it's back - that #1 in 6.5-06(well 6.5x65RWS actualy as that's the reamer my smith has)with 28" barrel (same overall length as my bolt gun with 24" barrel)set up for Lapua 108gr scenars at around 3,500fps (BC 0.478) Oh...

And if you can't go prone?

And if you can\'t go prone? Looking at the number of photos of nice rifles equipped with bipods etc I wonder what y'all do when there is an obstacle in the way such as long grass or rising ground or indeed if you cannot see ground (ie safe backstop) behind the game animal you want to shoot...
