US forest issues kill order for feral cows in New Mexico

It's my understanding the flyovers and shooting will be handled by the USDA Predation management team. This is the same group that handles the Coyote management during Fawning time in Antelope country. Where did you see the $100k price tag, just curious as I'd like to read more about it. Personal opinion for me, getting the cattle out of this area is good for the Elk and Deer herd. 150 head of cattle hunkered down in a general area can be devastating to that area. I've seen it over my 40 years of hunting Arizona. Rancher will move 100-200 head of cattle into a area and within a couple of weeks most everything else moves out. It's eaten down to nothing with crap all over the place.

If the NM cattle board owns the feral cattle, why is the Forest Service spending tax dollars to remove them? Simply order the owners to remove them and, if they don't, the FS will and bill the cattle board for the cost. I'll wager the cattle board would then strongly support the cattle be removed by hunters.
Unless you've worked for the Government you can't imagine how stupid it can be. Was paramedic chief for agency that trained first responders to deal with terrorists attacks. You wouldn't believe some of the crap they wanted me to do! I'd inform them I was constrained by the EMS laws of the state of Alabama and they would look at me and actually say but we're the federal government, we don't have to follow their laws. maybe not you, but I do. I was labeled as not being a team player.

Sounds good to me. No fees collected on feral cattle grazing so kill 'em off. The permitted rancher on that allotment would do it for free if he had any gumption. If you are sentimental about cow pies fertilizing the forest you should see how long it takes for decomposition in the arid west. If you're starving so much to hunt feral cattle get a job and get on the road kill list with your local dispatch center. Wish they would do that with the horses too but we can't have tears being shed by the Marlboro man.

Unrelated to the cows! But in 1981 we were about to head out into the west elk wilderness in Colorado for14 day elk hunt. Wrangler said anyone who knew horses to pick one out from the corral with about 40 head in it. I grabbed a halter and lead rope and went in eyeing several who shied away. One of them looked at me and stepped forward. I threw the lead rope over her neck and went to the corner and was putting the halter on. The wrangler can running up yelling, Mr.Mr. we don't ride her ,we only pack her. Her name is evil. She turned and looked at me, its like she was thinking, well I almost got you.

My gripe with the government is all the waste that comes with their policies and decisions. I'm not familiar with the area where these cattle are and judging from some of the posts so far it sounds like it could be pretty rough terrain. Harvesting an animal weighing 800-1200lbs in hill country can be difficult, especially if you don't have the means to easily pack it out. Still, seems like it could be done if they wanted to do it. Butchering them and letting the carcass rot just seems like a waste and having potential to create new problems. Just seems like there are better ways to handle it. Culling the herd through hunting has proven to be a successful way to manage many wildlife species Definitely don't want the situation to turn into the nightmare they have with wild horses or even worse, feral hogs.

We still talking about cows? Lol
Same situation in Missouri with feral hogs. They trap then on national forest land and dispose of them and the excuse is they could be diseased. It is not legal to even shoot them on nat. forest land.
