Freebore Discussion

Well if you want a magazine then yeah, best to plan accordingly.

I run everything single shot. Either SS action or converted.
I like single shot feeding & picked ejection, full stock and action strength, full action bedding, and any choice for COAL.
I also keep ammo in my front pants pocket, where it's pretty much a standard temp(as load developed) regardless of weather.
There are plenty of plans out there.

Mag length vs Cartridge over length to the lands.

Make a plan, work the plan. Large-bore hunting rifles will shoot in the 2's and smaller if you plan ahead.

Many cartridges are put on short actions when they should be on a large action due to longer mag boxes.

Some questions about this. Was finishing up a 300 WSM rifle build and debated about a SAAMI vs custom freebore. It seems the freebore physics is more complicated than simply pushing the bullet out gives more space for more powder. My question is have any of you fired the same powder, same bullet combo with a long freebore vs a SAAMI chamber and seen the difference?? Seems logical that there would be; however the only article I've ever seen testing the theory seemed to refute the adage.
built same 300 wsm on la 3.155 coal did not gain more powder or speed for pressue amount with 181 HH shoots good but not as thought or expected. sloride

In a short action, SAAMI vs custom will be pretty close. The magazine just isn't much longer.….maybe 0.05"

I had this conversation with bugholes when I was helping a friend put a 6 creed together. They said the 1000 yd guys found the saami to be best.
for 300 WSM?

The problem with 300 WSM is it powers 190-215gr bullets well, but the chamber/magazine fit 150-180gr bullets…..hmm.

Bullet jumping long ways = a better chance of the bullet getting started crooked.

I'm not sure about that, but I don't really know. A tight throat pushes bigger bullets or longer mono bullets deep in the case.

I prefer to seat a bullet where the base of the bearing surface is at the base of the neck and 0.030" off the lands….well, I can dream!

You can absolutely seat a bullet wherever you want to if you design the cartridge, seat a bullet where desired and have your own reamer made.

I've done it with 5 cartridges.

Maybe but I have 2 rifles that have a cavernous freebore, yet they shoot 1/4 & 1/2" groups.

My 257 Wby has .375" of freebore and I don't even know how much my .308 has. I seat 175 VLDS at 2.950 and still have .055" to the lands.

Yes and yes.

I have used two different reamers for the 300wsm one is .280fb the other is .215fb....the .280fb makes more velocity with a .025 jump and takes more powder than the .215fb jumping .005 using a Berger 215hybrid.

I also used two different reamers in a 284Shehane....one was a bore rider with .323fb for the 190Atips the other was a .235fb for the 180/184 Bergers. I ran the 184's in both chambers. The bore rider with the long freebore obviously made more velocity with less pressure but more powder. No way could I run the same powder charge I ran in the .323fb in the .235fb it would have locked the gun up.
