The New Raptor is hatching.....

About like a 25-06 in a standard sporter weight rifle.... If that, recoil is a very subjective thing. Most of my customers tell me recoil feel less then what I discribe it as . Lets just say it was very easy to see the bullets impact at all the ranges I tested her at. I could see where at ranges under 300 yards it may be a bit more difficult to see bullet impact but beyond that, it would be very easy to see bullet impact.

The rifle "feels" different then a conventional rifle. Most conventional rifles will have somewhat of a vibration to then after firing. This is simply from the vibrations in an unsupported barrel. The Raptor LRSS feels much more like a heavy V-Block rifle, there is nothing you feel after the shot.

Many may not know what I am discribing because it is very suttle and if you have only shot conventional rifles, this has not been felt but there is a "solid" feel when you shoot a V-Block rifle and its the same for the Raptor LRSS.

Cold today but tomorrow, new years day is supposed to be warmer so I am going to try to get out again with the bird of prey!!! Will clean her up good first thing in the morning and then head back out to tweak the drop chart a bit more.

Just talked Bill on Oklahoma and he said there may be the possibility for a 1400 yard class shot on the ranch I will be hunting. Better get her fine tuned and ready!!!

I will try to take some better range pictures tomorrow, always can use a bit more gun porn!!!

What an impressive hunk of artillery!! Cant wait to get my hands on her and "feel" her up!!! Good luck on the tuning tomorrow, should be a bit warmer. The humidity today is high and that 8* feels like -18*, to me, it really feels cold out. See ya next week.

How come nothing offered in the 256,270 or 277 AM? Has the 7mm Am just eclipsed these rounds and made them obsolete? I was interested in the 270 am but was curious what the recoil was without a muzzle break. I read somewhere that it was designed to be about that of the 7mm rem mag but was this with or without a muzzle break? Is there a difference in recoil between the 270 am and 7mm am? Thanks.

Pyroducksx3,

The 257, 6.5, 270 and 277 AMs were heavily based on the old, heavy Wildcat bullets. THe 6.5mm AM still could use the 142 gr SMK to good results but its not one of my best sellers, nor is it the best for long range big game hunting. Personally, I like to have at least a 7mm for long range big game hunting.

Thats really the only reason.

Right now just working on the right hand version but who knows down the road. No set price yet, that will be greatly determined by the size of the initial order of receivers I place.

Kirby, this is a very exciting project of yours that has quite a few of us on this site buzzing. I for one can't wait to here about each step in the process, muchless the up coming hunt and photo's. Additionally, I look forward to seeing your finished product.

Thanks for the up to date updates!

Took her out today for some drop chart testing. Had to do some tweaking with the BC over the velocity spectrum but got things pretty close. Dropping off a bit more then I expected at extended range but that is likely because it was pretty high humidity and 14 degrees!!!

Once I got the drop chart tweaked a bit I took three shots each at 553, 841, 1257 and 1497 yards. All but one shot at 1497 yards easily landed well within 1/2 moa of my point of aim.

Hope to get her out when the temps warm up a bit to around 40 this weekend and just see what difference that makes, pretty sure it will not be 14 degrees in Oklahoma when that old big whitetail walks out.

Ramshot says their powders are as stable as any extreme stick powder on the market when it comes to temp changes, we will see if that is true this weekend hopefully if the wind stays calmed down a bit. I think I am close enough now that I can start dialing in for wind. Was just a slight breeze today and drift numbers were hitting right where Exbal predicted they would be so I think I can zero that turret for the time being.

Getting close and she is shooting very well. Its time now to get off the bench and get my belly in the dirt for some real field range testing and practice sessions to get ready. Three weeks to get her fine tuned and likely 80% of that weather will keep me off the range this time of year. Plus load of customer work that needs to get worked on and shipped. Lots to do, fun times though!!!

This new Raptor LRSS is fofilling my dreams of what I wanted this concept to turn out like. Once I get the preferred stock on it, I think I will be 100% satisfied and for those that know me, thats a pretty tall order!!! Time generally finds something to improve on or try differently.

It was to cold for steel today, maybe this weekend I will get the plates out and ring some steel and get some pics. When its breezy and 14 degees, just working the palm to get the drop numbers gets pretty old quick!!!

Yes, they are being made in Montana with Montana barrels as well. I looked into the Lone wolf stocks but he would not built stocks to the specs I wanted so that option went out the door. To bad it would have been an all Montana rifle, at least for the major componants.

Glen Harrision is making them for me to my specs. He is making receivers for many other rifle makers as well but to his specs, this is a completely new receiver other then receiver diameter and the triggers used.
