Planning my 40 yo birthday present

This project is progressing with the best possible way which is to get a proper scope. I came across a Black Friday offer of a brand spanking new Steiner M7xi 4-28x56 with MSR reticle for 2000 euros which I consider as a steal, so I had to go for it. It will be sitting on top of my old Tikka in 30-06 for some time, and once I get a new rifle it will most likely find its place on top of that.

Feeling pretty good now that the scope issue has been sorted out and I still have almost 3 years to figure out the rifle issue

Like others have said. You can build off a Rem 700, Tikka T3, Win 70….they alll meet your spare part requirements. Rem has more options.

Using the spare firing pin in 2047 example….i think Rem 700 or Win 70 are your best bet, but they will be hard to find still.

A custom action(well any quality action) will most likely never fail, so planning for that is a bit hard. Also, I would guess you may likely get into the build and rebuild cycle so many get into. That is where you shoot more, with hotter calibers and therefore you are taking that build back to the smith every 5-10 years for a new barrel and action recheck.

That seems to be a good quality scope that should serve you well.

You keep mentioning barrel life. For reference: The 6.5manbun has approximately half the barrel life as the 308, sometimes even less than that. There have been 308s that have gone well north of 5000 rounds before the barrel showed signs of degradation.

You also mentioned shooting mostly smaller game. With that being the case I would look at something like a 243 or 6creed (does not require a manbun) as it will have less recoil (be more fun to shoot) and depending on ammo may even cost less to shoot. The 25 caliber is also highly over looked but has some great options available now if you are a handloader. Being a handloader opens up a lot of additional avenues for quality ammo beyond factory offerings.

Food for thought, keep us updated on which route you go.

He wants a new rifle not a sex change surgery. That corvette is an abortion of a car. Yuck!

Agreed!
As a woman, any man driving a Corvette is automatically put on the 'hell no' list.
If a man wants to impress a woman with what he drives, make it an immaculately restored old 4x4 with big V8 and manual transmission, or if new, a gentleman's vehicle like a Porsche Cayenne. We also don't mind a regular daily driver vehicle such as an F series, or Ram truck.
Best of all, be a great driver.
Not just a steering wheel holder, who has no clue how to truly drive. If you don't know how to drive a manual, navigate a mudhole, back up a trailer well, you will look the part of a fool. A Corvette though, that screams 'I'm old, pathetic, and this is my final grasp at life'.

Could go everywhich way here. If you want a interesting rifle, then bolt gun is the way.

Remington 700 5R will give you great off-the-shelf accuracy. You can "customize" trigger, stock, and other bits to your liking with ease. And, there is deep support for the platform. Recommend threaded barrel as you can work with suppressors in Sweden w/o tax stamps.

Stock, chassis, hybrid? The world and your checkbook is your oyster. ADL, BDL, DBM, etc.....

On caliber, I'm +1 for .308. Readily available ammunition, accurate and effective to your desired purposes and won't beat your shoulder up to shoot it a lot. MANY options for military surplus, factory loaded, and components for reloading. Suppressed, .308 a pussycat.

S-B 5-25 PMII is a lot of scope - magnification, weight and $$. I have one from shooting PRS and it's a lot of glass to carry in a hunting situation. The SB 3-12x50 PMII was used by USMC. SB also recently release an "Ultra Bright" low-light high performance scope. For pure hunting, there are more expensive, but Leica is hard to beat.

Good luck and be sure to post what you settle on!

Mad love for a woman who can back up a trailer.

And here we go. Bashing an American made super car and promoting euro. Thinking a guy who drives a Porsche is some how a gentleman. Wow good times. Drive what you want, buy what you want, the only person who has to live with your choice is you and it's just fine to change your mind as you go down the road of what rifle do you want or need. There's a reason many people have a safe full of guns, most not being used.

I don't need a porche. I just rely on my superior intelligence and uncommon good looks. The Dad bod is a plus since I hear they're all the rage now.

Well if you go euro you have to get skinny jeans and frequent the gay bars, so you are on the right path brother. I just use my rugged charm and inferior looks to keep them laughing and we all know entertainment pays

Being on the other side of the pond I'd go with the Sako. You'll have the rest of your life to enjoy it. And tho I love the 308 Win I'd consider the 6.5x55 because it should be cheap and plentiful over there. Or a 6.5 CM, I threw up alittle. Heck a 6mm of some sorts, whatever it cheaper to shoot. If you have your heart set on a 308 Win I'd say go for it. I've had one for over 30 years and have no intention of getting rid of it. I'm sure I have over 10k rounds down the barrel and it still shoots sub 0.5 MOA.

For what it's worth, if you are looking for a rifle to hunt with for a long time, I would think about "what" you want to hunt.

If you are ever considering longer range or larger critters, you may want to go with a 7mag, 300WM, or maybe even step into 338.

You can tame these with a good muzzle brake or suppressor.

For versatility of future upgrades or replacement parts, tough to beat Rem 700 or Winchester 70 actions. That said, for off the shelf, you have some good options you are considering and there are many others.

I will throw a shameless plug for the 280 in as a cartridge to consider. 😀. Biggest downside is off the shelf ammo, but if you reload that's a non-issue.
