Thanks AJ, you have one sweet looking rig. I love the color of the stock and the Matte finish on the metal. It looks real cool!!!
What bullets are you planning on using. I remeber Kirby talking about a 265grn Wildcat bullet that had better BC than the 300grn MK, and I believe he said he was pushing it at 3500+fps or faster. I can't remeber the actual info, but it looked pretty impressive. I also heard Hornady was designing a 338 A-Max bullet. I think it was either a 250 or 275grn A-Max I am not sure. The 265grn Wildcat bullet sounded awesome.
Anyhow, let me know what bullet you are planning on shooting, and the types of velocities you are expecting. Kirby sure does some good work.

Thanks, the Teflon finish that Shawn Carlock put on, is so flat I can't hardly get a picture of the flutes to show up! It is awesome.
When I ordered the rifle, I told Kirby "I want a huge slab brake, kinda like what you see on the front of an Abrams tank!" And thats exactly what it reminds you of.
I am using the 300SMK's, since I'm a bit short on brass at the moment (bad lot from Jamison, that they are replacing). I am running a very mild load that was chrono'ing at 3275 last night. I'm on the 6th reload on one of the brass and only had to actually 'resize' it once. The first 5 loadings, I just resized the neck, but it was a bit hard to open the bolt the 5th time, so I pushed the shoulder back .002" and it loads right back up no problem.
Once I get my stockpile of brass, I will probably shoot for 3350fps or so, but it really depends on the accuracy. There is really nothing I need to do, that I can't do at a mild load running 3275fps (thats more than 7100ft lbs at the muzzle and more than 2500ft lbs at 1500yds!) Nice mild load Kirby!
I hope to stretch the legs on her a little this weekend.

This is about my idea of teh perfect 338 AM hunting rifle. Enough weight for rock solid shooting to any range you can get the bullet to remain supersonic to but still portable to some degree. There are alot of conventional varmint rifles that do not weight much less then this big girl.
I will also back up the quality of the teflon coating by Shawn. If someone wants a rifle coated, I would strongly recommend his services. There is only a couple things I farm out on my customers rifles and the reason I do so is because the guys I have do these services are about as good as you will find ANYWARE. Shawns coatings are worldclass.
SOme of you may notice and wonder why the rifle has 4 rings. Well, to be blunt, the muzzle brake requires it!!! Two rings can not support the recoil forces and then also control the extreme deceleration forces generated by the brake. As such, two rings are positioned to control recoil energy and two are positioned to support the scope during the extreme deceleration forces generated by the brake. If you read the story I posted about our pronghorn hunt this year, you already know this.
Just for everyones information, I am working on a new barrel contour that will drop rifle weight another 1.5 lbs while still offering what should be very good consistancy down range.
I also just got in one of the new Leupold 8.5-25x 50mm Mk 4 FFP scopes. While I will not say they are the equal to the NF scopes, they offer a great value for a bit less money and 10 oz lighter compared to the NXS. basically allowing you to play with the mid 15 lb range with a scoped and bipod mounted rifle ready to hunt with. Not to mention ALL STEEL!!!
Anyway, unless I will be hunting in Idaho, all of my 338 AMs or 375 AMs from here on will be built exactly like Dons rifle. It is simply my idea of the perfect hunting rifle for the 338 Allen Magnum.

Kirby, Its my idea of the perfect long range rifle too!
Well, even though the wind was bad 5-18mph and switching all over the place, I had to get out and shoot her at 200yds tonight. I only shot 11 shots (averaged 3200 fps, with a SD of 26fps) not the best SD but it will only get better, as I segregated the brass I have and am saving the best/most similar set for later.
I shot one fouler, two 3 shot groups and one 4 shot group. The largest group was just under 1.9", but all horizontal as the wind really whacked me (only .4" vertical) The best group was .6" center to center and the other one was .9". I'm still amazed at the lack of recoil. I am using ear plugs AND ear muffs. Its amazing, all that recoil energy seems to be transfered into noise ;-), its like a bomb blast echoing around every time I shoot.
Well, now I gotta find someplace to really stretch her legs. I'm getting used to the trigger and the whole feel of the rifle. Shooting this rifle is like driving a Ferrari, you know she'll do a lot more than you're ready for.
I'll keep you all posted.

The hole in the upper left was a quick fouling shot that would have been in the group if I hadn't decided to adjust the scope down and to the right.
