I understand not being thrilled with a .270. For some reason the choice in good B.C. bullets is so slim when you have so many choices in 6.5 or 7mm. I did a .308 on a long action and it opens up a few more options as far as bullet length but a SAAMI spec chamber is still a spec chamber so your throat will be the same unless you go custom there too. You can gain a little speed but not much by seating the longer bullets out farther. Definately go with a little faster twist. It doesnt hurt to run a short cartridge in a long action. The weight difference between a short and long action only matters if you're a sheep hunter and how many of those guys are lugging magnums up and down anyway.
