I have a few navy buddies with 338 Lapua`s both of my buddies can shoot 1 MOA @ around 2000 meters and was wondering if there's a rifle cartridge with less recoil, thats cheaper, or has better barrel life that I could use to compete with them? Thanks in advance for any thoughts or answers.

One of the big 30 cals with the 230 Berger would get you in the ball game. Its not the same but a 300ultra driving the big bergers is not to be taken lightly. Barrel life is probably about the same

If you want to "out Shoot" a 338 Lapua at 2000 yards. Other than shooter skill the only way the rifle will make it easier is with a higher BC bullet at the same or more velocity. Assuming they are shooting the 300 Berger then you will need to do it with more velocity. That means you will need a bigger case such as the 338 Lapua AI , 338 Snipe Tac , or one of the variations off the 338-378 Wby Case. Or Talk to Defensive Edge about a 338 EDGE +P or 338 Terminator +P . Or, you could venture into the world of the 375's, or larger.

But looking for a "smaller, less expensive," caliber to out shoot a 338 Lapua , it ain't going to happen unless you live in a world of make believe. At 2000 yards BC and retained velocity along with less drift will rule as far as caliber capabilities go. But again shooter skill will be a big plus with any rifle.

338 edge or 338 ultramag. Won't beat it but it will keep up especially if you reload. There is another thread on here where a son was trying to beat his dad (dad using the lapua, son something else). I'll try and find it and post it for you.

I don't know your shooting skill but 1 MOA @ 2000 is VERY good you have to have very high BC as stated above along with fps the only way to beat it would go BIG and you are not going big and not spending alot of coin you are fighting a battle you can't win. Good luck, have you tried maybe turning your buddys turret one turn:rolleyes: just thinking.

You could do it in every way but energy with a .300RUM, 30-378, or 30-338 Lapua Imp and a 30+" barrel. They should shoot the 230's 3150 to 3300fps. Barrel life would probably be half of the 338 Lapua, with the last two, but it has considerably less drop and wind drift not to mention less recoil. You could also do a 338 Lapua Imp. like has been mentioned also.

Yep, This is true but at 2000 they are pretty much even for velocity if the 30 cal had a MV of 3200 and the Lapua 2850 But the 30 cal has 2.25 more wind drift from a 10 mph full value wind.

When I punched the numbers in the 30 cal with the 230 target bullets @ 3200fps has less drift at 2000yds versus a Lapua with Bergers at 2850fps. Your right the velocity is almost even. The energy is irrelevant as you shouldn't be shooting game there with a impact velocity of 1150fps.

Hmm, I will recheck it. with a 10 mph full value I got 9.7 moa drift for the lapua and 12 moa for the 230 Target. I figured that was right since the 338 has a G1 BC of .818 and the 30 has a G1 of .743. I did have spin drift correction on I will take that out.

Just ran it again and took out the spin drift correction.

338 LM 30" barrel 300 OTM G1 BC of .818 muzzle velocity of 2850

2000 yards 10 mph 3:00 wind correction 11.3 moa

30 cal 30" barrel 230 Target G1 BC of .743 muzzle velocity of 3200

2000 yards 10 mph 3:00 wind correction 13.9 moa.

338 has less drift by 2.6 moa @ 2000 yards

This was inputting into shooter app.

I just did it again in JBM and it shows 11.4 for the 338 Lapua and 10.5 for the 30 cal at 3200fps. I did it at 3000ft elevation.
