Help me choose plz

I hunt deer and elk and maybe moose or bear if I could ever draw. I have the chance to buy either:

2003 Remington 700 BDL SS in 338 Win mag with muzzle break

Or

2013 Savage 116 SS in 300 Win mag no muzzle break, but comes with sling, scope, hard case and about 50 rds ammo

Neither have been shot much and are in perfect condition. I can get either for about the same price.

Which would you buy and why?

I have my trusty 30-06, but want to add to the collection...

I'd get the Savage, as much as I like Remingtons, Savages are right with them in my opinion. The .300 Win will be a better long range cartridge and is better suited for what you're hunting. Now if you were shooting Grizzlies, I'd get the .338 Win, but you don't need it for elk and even moose.

It is not the rifle but the cartridge that is the issue. The 300 win mag will do the job but the 338 will do it better. There is no such thing as over kill so I would probably choose the 338 with the brake.

It will recoil less than the 300 without a brake and will drop Elk, bear and moose better. it does not make any difference on white tail which one you choose.

As much as I love Remington 700's, and dislike Savage...I hate the .338 WinMag caliber worse. Mainly because mine wouldn't shoot... But that's a different story now. She's been rebarreled as of today. Gotta pick it up tomorrow from the smith.

If you get the .338 WM, I hope you have better luck than I did.

Also, I have 39 pieces of once-fired, de-primed, cleaned, and polished brass if your interested in them. I have no use for them anymore.

Personally when I hear .338 Win Mag I don't think of a tack driving long range caliber. My mind drifts to thinking of a shorter ranged big game cartridge. I will never own either cartridge but would much rather have a .300 Win over a .338 any day. If I were buying the rifle I would wish the rifles were chambered the other way around, would really prefer another 700 than get a Savage.

Good to hear about your newly barreled Remington 700! What caliber is it chambered in?

Went to a 7mm RemMag for now...Then later on I will be swapping the new sporter barrel for a Sendero SF .300 Weatherby barrel that I'm going to have rechambered to .300 Ackley (#3, the big .300 Ackley). My smith can get me dies that match his reamer for about $300, and the one he built will put 5 in the exact same hole. Saw the target with my own eyes. Never seen one put 5 in the same hole, but my old .308 would put 3 of them in there.

I think that is the only thing that is holding me back. The savage with everything is the better deal, but I'd rather it be a 700. That's what my 30-06 is...

In this case the Savage would probably the the more accurate of the two rifles.

There is some overlap here with the 30-06. Thing is the 300 Win pretty much leaves the 30-06 and the 338 in the dust. The 338 would have more knockdown power inside 250 yards or so and if your were actually hunting a lot of moose and big elk at close range it would be a good choice. Problem is a 338 looses steam real quick and has a lot of win drift due to the low BC. So it tends to have some accuracy issues at longer ranges.

Another option would be to sell the 30-06 and just go with the 300 Win. But I get attached to guns and sometimes have issues with letting one go..

either one will do the job. I own 3 savages an 11 in 7mm a 116 in .300 win mag and a FCSS 116 in .338 WM. Ever savage I have has recoil like a .243. I also own 2 700's in 1 in .300 WM and the other in 7mm rum. Both lock tight like the savages, both weigh as much as the savages but **** the remingtons have a s#!% load of recoil. Its manageable but you dang sure notice it. Both mfg's have their pros and cons. It all boils down to which one fits you the best. Just my 2 cents

Yeah, I'll keep the 30-06. I've traded away too many guns and regretted it later.

The feedback seems pretty consistent that I should buy the 300 win mag, so I'll probably go with that. I'll poke my head back in after and let you know how it shoots...
