Hello all,

I am just working with loads for my 1:10 .243 win with 24" barrel.

40grs of varget and 6mm 90gr Lapua scenar will give a good grouping but hot load @ 3196fps.
I think this will just be supersonic @ 1000 yards?

Can I get anymore velocity from a slower powder/bigger load?

I have plenty of N160 or RL19 available.

Or should I just get the 1:8 barrel on order /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks
Jeza

Why not try the Hornady 105 AMAX? It's cheaper than the Lapua, easier to find, and if you work up to the OCW of 48.5 grains of Hodgdon Retumbo--with a magnum primer, by the way--you'll probably get good results.

The 1:9 should be fine with the 105 AMAX. Hornady claims they designed that bullet to fly well from common factory twists. Should make about 2900 to 2950 fps, and has a BC of .500.

That bullet has been very accurate for me to 1000 yards, and a bit beyond...

I'm shooting an 8 twist, but as mentioned, I think you'll be okay with the 9...

Jeza, Don't waist your time with the 105. I have a 1-10 douglas 243AI that won't stabalize them. I'm going to be trying Speers 85gr boattail spitzer soon. Has a bc of .404, it should run 3500-3600fps out of my 28" barrel.

For some reason I thought he had a 1:9.25 twist... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

What kind of rifle and barrel is this? Most of the new .243's have 1:9's...

Thanks for the replies.

I have already tried the 105's just in case they would shoot in my 1:10 but alas no hit the barn door.
Got them to 2983 fps.

Ive got 87gr v-max but they go about the same velocity as the 90gr.

Cowboy your 28" barrel must help a lot.

Changing barrels is a bit of a pain in the UK due to licencing.

What powder/load you planning for the 85gr?

Jeza, I have one load that pushes 70gr berger mefs to 3725 with Win 760 and cci mag primers. I am trying to switch to all Hodgdon Extreme powders, so I have yet to velocity test the 85 speer. I loaded sierra 85 grain game king hps to 3600 with 50gr of H4350 and cci 200, but bc on this bullet is low. Don't load that charge in your 243 remember mine is an Ackley Improved. Start low from book and work up.

You should be able to get between 3200-3300 with 85s in a 24"

I realize this thread is OLD but I'm wanting to try these Scenars out of my 1:10 6AI, I'm running H4350 now with 75s and 87s - will also start with this powder on the 90 Scenars. Anyone running anything similar to this with good results?
