6.5-06 Using Reloder 22

Rich,
When I was checking the specs on the Nosler site I noticed R-22 was listed as with the highest velocity with 130gr bullets. So i assume R-22 will be a good powder for the 6.5 Sherman?

It works well but RL23 gives as good velocity and is far more temp stable.
RL26, N565, will give even more velocity.
With 140 up, N570 is great and Retumbo and H1000 are good too

I have never had a 6.5 caliber rifle but I have seen several friends struggle to get decent velocities with a 6.5.
I have a government hunter friend in WY that absolutely wore a custom barrel out trying to get more velocity. A lot of guys love them but you will NEVER see a 6.5 anything on my reloading bench.
I wouldn't condemn one caliber with so many cartridge choices you know the Creedmoor is under powered there are so many so much stronger than that don't short yourself the 65 in my opinion is one of the most efficient calibers out there and can be made to do pretty much whatever you want with the right chambering

I just had my 6.5-06 rebarreled after I shot it out. I went longer and heavier this time. My reamer has 0.175" freebore so I can load them a little longer. With 56gr re26 and a 140gr, I averaged 3120fps, that's the same charge that gave me 3012fps in my other barrel. Problem is, I dont have much 26 left and cant find any. Looking to try re23 next.
Try it you will not be disappointed!

My 6.5-06 wears a 24" Bbl. I have never shot anything bigger than a 120gr . The Batnes 120 TSX 3277fps with IMR-4350. This load with this bullet takes elk cleanly. My Win 70 EW 264 26" Bbl drives 140gr class bullets 3222 fps with VV24N41. Either of these cal's & loads shoot quite well on my 500 yd target.

Nice to see you adding value to the forum. Why did you even bother to post your gibberish...

So I don't want to hijack your post but I just had my first semi custom gun built and it's in a 6.5-06 and the first powder I tried was RL22 I believe 51

gr shooting 140 sst although the grouping looked promising my velocity was way down 2850 my goal is to shoot the ELD X 143 at a velocity of 2950 to 3000 the gun has a 26"Lilja barrel any information you could pass on would be greatly appreciated

Lab rat,
My experience with the 6.5-06 is the load data is very conservative. That said where are you on pressure signs?

My wife's 6.5-06 built on a 1957 Colombian Mauser action with a 26" Douglas barrel pushes 130's over 3100fps...with no pressure signs.

Well

when I started this project my goal was to push a 143 or 140 gr bullet to 2950 to 3100 so my next option to try is RL26

I've run a pile of 6.5-284's. Similar performance to 6.5-06. and feel you should be right in line with 2950-3000 using retumbo, 1000, and rl 26. My favorite was rl26 in a 28". I ran 140's at 3100 and 147's at 3015 (53 grains rl26)

been shooting 6.5/06 for over 45 years. federal 270 brass trimed to 63mm r-22- 54 grains with 130 at 3050 and that is plenty of velocity for this bullet weight.. 52.5 grains r-22 140 at 2950 and that too is a great long range load.. a long time ago i used 54 grains of 4350 w-140gr bullet but this is too much pressure and today i think 51 grains of 4350 would be the max. you know 4350 powder from canada is not the same a the wilmington De. powder.. my loads my be to hot for some rifles I would start 2 grains under a work up..

If you really want to get over that hump, the Ackley version will get you there on the 6.5-06. I never saw the need. Back when the 6.5x284 was a short action and .264 bullets over 140 grains had round noses the ole 6.5ought six seemed to duplicate 264 Win mag without the noise and recoil. RL22 running accurately 2950 to 3050 is practically hard to beat.
