In the process of rebarreling a pre 64 model 70 in 30-06. Wanting 338-06 but 338 Win.mag looks like a gain of 300 fps +.

From you handloaders out there, with a 26" barrel, what sort of speed can I expect with a 220-250 gr bullet out of a 338-06?

I'm away from my load manuals right now but this guy usually has pretty good info on specific cartridges and on game performance. There are several guys here using the 338-06 so I'm sure you will get particulars soon.

I have a 338 Win Mag and I love it. Not too much recoil and it's emphatic on target to say the least.

I can't speak to the std 338/06 but the '06 head size 338 Sherman will push a 250 Berger to 2800+ with a 24" barrel.
I would guess the std 338/06 is at least 150' slower?

You will need a magnum bolt face if you go the .338 WM route. Stay on course on what you wanted to build, and do not let anybody talk you out of it, including me. Whichever route you take, go for it; it is not going to be your last. Good luck with your build.

Love my 300 Win mag for that reason. It feels about half as explosive as the Weatherby and ammo has been pretty reasonable.

My 25" barrel 338-06 runs numbers like these:
200/210g @ 2750fps.
225g @ 2700fps.
250g @ 2600fps.

As Feenix said, you would have to open the bolt face for the 338WM to work.
I have 3 of them too, they run about 250fps faster with a 26" barrel.

Cheers.
These numbers are no slouch esp. for the powder capacity of the cartridge.

I have a pair of identical pre 64 Model 70 Winchester featherweight rifles chambered in 338-06 and they are my favorite rifles for hunting. They easily get over 2800 fps with the 180 grain AccuBond and 55 grains of Reloader 15. If I was hunting large animals like elk I would increase the load to 57 grains. You have a big choice of powders with this cartridge including Reloader 17, IMR 4064 and Viht 150 and I get good accuracy with all of them. The round shoots completely through large deer and makes a very efficient hunting round with recoil similar to heavy bullets in a 30-06. My second choice for hunting larger game would be the 210 grain Partition but I can see no need for them in deer hunting. The rifles are very accurate and easy to hit with out past 300 yards. I primarily use my rifles for large whitetail, mule deer and hogs. You will not be disappointed with a 338-06.

I was getting 2825fps with 200 grain Nosler E-tips out of my 24" 338-06 AI. Shot .5 moa in a sub 5 lb rifle. Recoil was tamed by a brake, I shouldn't have sold that rifle! With the 338-06 or 338-06 AI, or the 338 Sherman at great choices for your build and action. The critter on the other end won't know the difference between them and a 338 win mag.

If you choose your powder carefully it is quite easy to do.
Win 760 will get you there and then some and if that doesn't do it for you then H4350 or Varget will.

Cheers.
