300 RUM Advice.....

Hornady Brass, Retumbo, Federal Mag Primers, Hornady ELD-X 200gr.

Hornady would be wise to mass produce the 200gr ELD-X round for the 300 RUM. Hornady offers the 220gr ELD-X which is a great round if you have a barrel that can handle the heavier bullet. My 1:10 twist barrel has a hard time grouping the heavier bullet at 100 yards...200 yards it is about the same...300 yards it walks a bit and that is why I choose to go with the lighter 200gr ELD-X, grouping tightens up significantly.

Barnes 200gr LRX is a good option but it is a monolithic bullet, meaning it likes the faster twist rated barrels (ie: 1:9).

I have a 300 RUM, 1:10" twist, it's a rem-700 Sendero. when I shoot it with any VLD slug over 190Gr. or any traditional slug over 200Gr. the accuracy at 300 yards is 6" to 10". I have experimented with 208, 212, 210, 215, 220 barnes, nosler, hornady, and sierras. I am so angry with the gun that I am seriously considering ripping the barrel off and putting a 1:8" or 1:7" twist barrel on it just so I can get good accuracy with the 195Gr. and greater slugs. oh and the monos will not group smaller than IC choked 12 gauge. yes, I think I have a bad barrel for heavier slugs. 185's & 190's group under a dime at 300 yards.

Both of my 300rum rifles are in the .5 to .6" range at 100 with 225 Hornady hpbt pills driven with enough rl33 to get them to 3,000 fps.... remmy brass and 215's of course... I load to mag length too; I want those long pills to have a bit of run at the rifling and not nose slump when they hit it. I've also driven 180's with I5010 and rl25. A 180 at 3300-3400 fps is wicked on mule deer. I taught one to cartwheel (while running) using a 180 on it a number of years back.

ADG brass is very good.

We have loaded quite a few 300 rums with 181g Hammer Hunters. They generally finish out give or take 3400 fps. This is an outstanding combo to 1000y with a fantastic point blank range capability.

So would you think a 200 or 210a better option ?

My rifle likes the 200gr ELD-X, therefore I like the 200gr ELD-X! Every rifle likes a different load so keep experimenting until you find what your rifle likes. I'm getting .5" at 100 and around an inch at 200 & 300 yards...this is more than sufficient for me with a hunting rifle, making the 1st shot and getting knowing that it is going to make its mark is priceless.

Anyone shooting 300 RUM is 99.99% using it to hunt long range...all the bullet's mention in this thread are capable of killing big game at long ranges.

So true.... have to find out what it likes to eat the best. Mine will be mostly paper or a trip hunting 2 or 3 times a year. Wanna shot to 600 or farther and see what groups the best out younder..

In my 28" 1:10" .300RUM, I got great accuracy with 175 LRX, 210 HVLD, 210 SMK, 215 Hyb, 230 Hyb. But the 215 and 230s seem to just hammer game. Mine is strictly an elk rifle after having shot only one mule deer. In my opinion, too much gun for deer if a close shot presents itself. 183 yard shot was devastating on the offside shoulder of a quartering away buck.

Amen to that brother,
at 800 yards it is hard on anything smaller than an elk 230 at 3110 is even hard on elk at short range.

You will get more speed out of the 215 Berger than than the 210 as the 215 has a shorter bearing surface and a much better BC, .631 for the 210 vs .691 for the 215.
You didn't say what magazine length you will be running but the 215 hybrid is also better at various seating depths.
