284 Win Questions

I am considering a turnkey 284 Win Tikka build. I have a Tikka standard action that I was considering selling to get a magnum bolt face to go with a 7mm Saum build but stumbled on 284 Win info. From what I can tell, 284 Win brass is way easier to come by then 7mm Saum and it looks like I can get close in performance. So here are my questions if you guys with experience wouldn't mind sharing.

1- Will I get all the benifits of a 284 Win out of 2.970 oal? that length would work with the many AI non binder plate mags I have plus would allow me to use a KRG chassis to save a little money.

2- Can I get over 2700 FPS with 162-168 bullets with a 20-22 inch barrel? I will be running suppressed so I would really like a 20 inch barrel.

3- Will the 284 Win run out of AI 308 mags or do I need short mag size mags?

Thank you for your time fellas.
Bob

I did a 284 Win Improved (essentially an Ackley) on a Tikka action. I'm shooting 180's at about 2850 out of a 26" tube

With that shorter barrel and lighter bullets you should be able to get really close to 2700 I wouldn't think you'd get much more

Tagging in. I have a 24" 284 Win barrel I haven't shot yet. I was planning on running the 120 HH out of it as shots will be under 500 yds. Lapua offering straight 284 brass now is also a plus.

What is meant by straight 284 brass? I saw that Lapua brass is available.
Straight 284 is just plain old 284 Win. it's started to be called this as there is so many improved or wildcat versions. For a long time Lapua was only offering 6.5-284 win brass which if you wanted a standard 284 had to be necked up to accommodate a 284 bullet.

To anyone who is considering 284 Win, Lapua just announced they are halting production on it for the time being so get your brass now.

I have a .284 Win chambered with the Norma Match reamer with 0.208 Freebore. Mine is built on a Remington 700 long action and my OAL with 175gr Berger Elite Hunters is around 3.170". I think if you ran 162-168s you could fit them inside 2.970" OAL and not have too much bullet stuffed down in the case. I have a 26" barrel and push the 175s to 2820-2840 comfortably. I have gotten them up to 2900 without pressure using IMR 4451, RL26, and RL23 but they shot better around that 2820 range. I think with a 20-22" barrel you could get 2800+ FPS with 162-168s using one of the powders I mentioned above or something like RL16.

Personally, if I was limited to that mag length, I would be looking at something like a 7mm-08 Ackley Improved or 7mm SAW. They'll take full advantage of your magazine length without bullets being seated way down in the case. You also have Alpha brass for the 7mm SAW and for the 7-08 AI you can get Lapua, Peterson, and Alpha 7-08 brass and just fireform it when breaking in the barrel and getting your first 100-200 shots down the new barrel. Either one of those will be able to get 2700+ with 162-168s in a 20-22" barrel. Just my thoughts.

Really? Why would they do that when their 284 brass is so popular with the competition guys and their 284win and 284 shehane and such?

Nevermind. Just read the announcement on their website. There's a surprising number of cases on that list.

I just finished a 284 tikka build. It is plenty long enoght to make the old girl perform. If you use a SAMMI case dimension reamer it doesn't let you run the Lapua brass. It's too tight and you'll have clicker city. If you want to run Norma or Lapua brass the reamer will need to be spec'ed to that brass. Lapua has been the best of the offerings that we have tried.

I run the 162 eldx at 2950fps, 180 bergers at 2800fps, 175 eldx at 2800. Those will be the velocity nodes. I get the 177HH at 2850fps. I have never tested in barrel length shorter than 24"

The cartridge will need to be ran through a standard length mag. 308 length mags are too short.

Top powders will be H4350, H4831sc, and Reloader 23 for bullets 162 and up.

Some friends of ours. Long range steel competition guys. We're running the 284 improved cases with 180 hybrids in short actions and we're getting 2800. Don't recall what powder.

Thanks fellas, great info! I will have to see if Preferred Barrels here locally has a reamer that will work.

JD284 Win do you have suggestion for a barrel maker? I would like to get a Tikka Prefit carbon wrapped barrel. Also, are you running your tikka as a long action?

This is my 284 Win Long Range load in Tikka L magazine.
180 Hybrid- 3.285" COAL.
Fits with a tiny bit to spare.
