I just purchased a new CC 527 in the 17 Remington. I have a 17 Hornet and a .221 in the CZ and in the past have used the 22 Hornet and one converted 22K Hornet all of the CZ's That I have use shot as good as a Custom. My 17 Hornet using the 20gr V Max and 12.5gr of VV-120 shoots five shot groups at and under .5

Right now I putting together everything I need for the 17 Remington. I purchased some 25gr Bergers Have 200 of Todd Kindlers 25gr Golds and 200 of his 23gr..........Did talk to him a while back and he is no longer making bullets but sold his dies and the guy that purchased them is not offering them to the public at this time........... I also got some CFE 223 Powder

Has anyone used this Powder in there 17 Remingtons??

This biggest issue I see right now with the 17 is that bullet makers like Todd no longer offers his find bullets In fact I purchased his last box of 25gr Golds. That just leaves Hornady and Berger that make a 25gr Bullet............

Any one know of other bullet makers that make bullets 25gr or larger.

I loaded up some of the 23gr in the 17 Hornet and with 11.6gr of VV 120 and seating these bullets at 1.770 I'm getting groups below .5

Any information would be appreciated

I've had a .17 Rem since 1999 and I am sorry to say that I've watched as the number of factory 17 cartridges has risen and at the same time our bullet options have dwindled. Midway's dogtown, which is made by Nosler I think, and Noslers Varmageddon are two for you. But there used to be a dozen by Berger, Todd's, James Calhoon, Clint Starke...

Do you happen to know the twist in the CZ? It is 9" in the Hornet so I assume it is the same. We have just started designing a couple of bullets for the .17. An 18g and a 20g. They are the same length at .5". The 18g is designed for 9" twist and the 20g for 10" twist. The 18g has more boat tail and a more aggressive nose. We could possibly get a bit heavier for the 9" twist but they will get pretty blunt. These are designed with a 1.5mm hollow point as we are looking for violent impacts on varmints. We could gain a little weight and get better ballistics without a hollow point but I am guessing your use for .17's is for terminal performance.

This is a long way of saying we are working on .17's but we will not be able to make them as heavy as you are talking because we are pure copper. They are fast though. We had an 18g last year that we ran at 3800fps in the Hornet. That bullet was too long and would not stabilize in the 9" twist below 5000' elevation.

Have not used that particular powder. I do currently use R15 and will stay with it as its producing very accurate loads in my 17 Rem and 17 Tac. I am stuck in the mud as well after talking to Todd. I told him it would have been nice to know being that he talked me into the 17 Tac when I went with a full custom build and I loved the high BC bullets he offered. I would have stocked up on Golds but, I was still working on load development with 30gr & 27gr bullets. Then I got the news from a friend that wanted to build one as well. Now I'm sitting on only a 100 or so of each and treating them like my retirement (Don't touch and hopefully they will multiply!)

25s will work in a pinch but they don't have the performance I would prefer for my hunting situations

I haven't tried CFE223. I have been playing around with Varget, IMR 4320, and H4895 in my M700.

Reeds Ammo and Blackhole Bullets are your best bet currently if you are looking for 17 cal heavies. I just got some of the 25 gr VLD and 26 gr VLD bt from Reeds last week but haven't loaded any yet. They appear to be very high quality pills.

It's good to hear that you're developing some 17 cal pills Steve. It's a niche market with a dedicated following for sure. gun)

We did impact testing today at 3800fps with the 18g and 3650fps with the 20g with great results. Complete opening in the first couple inches but still carried to the back of 3rd milk jug. Will be shoot them tomorrow at distance to be sure they are shooting well. We will be testing with 17 Hornet.

With that kind of velocity out of a hornet, I'd imagine 4400-4600 fps out of a .17 Rem would be achievable with the 18 gr. That might be a tad rough on fur but I'd love to see it on prairie dogs. :D

I am not sure either. I really want to shoot something bigger than a gopher with one. In our expansion testing the 19g (I miss stated when I called it 18g) fully deformed in the first couple of inches but the retained weight was caught in the 3rd one gallon milk jug. So they are violent on impact but retain enough to penetrate well. We could run the hollow point a bit deeper to stop the penetration but I am not sure that we want that. Loading today we ended up at 3800fps with 10g of Lil Gun in a factory Ruger. I was able to shoot sub moa at 200y with my CZ in a swirling wind today. Feeling pretty good about the bullet as it is.

Roughly how large was the mushroom in your expansion testing? After thinking about this a bit, I'm willing to bet at under 4000 fps mv you'll see small exits on coyotes. Above that is a trickier proposition (as are fox and cats).

To my knowledge there isn't a 17 or 20 cal mono on the market currently. Most of the varmint bullets have the potential to splash on quartering shots and leave large exits even on broadside shots at medium range (250-500 yds) if they are pushed hard enough. But a mono shouldn't fragment, reducing the chance of both, while possibly providing some security in case of an impact on bone (ie shoulder). Small consistent exits I know I could live with.

The recovered bullet had impact vel apx 3800fps. The recovered bullet was average .25" dia. Weighed 13.6g from original 18.8g for 72%. Here is a pic.

How are the 25gr Berger Bullets working out for you..............??

Has anyone had any experience using them on Coyotes and do you get bullet exits?
