I have an 8 twist 24" proof carbon barrel and a standard long action coming, debating between the 280ai or the 284 win for shooting the barnes 168LRX. Initially I liked the 284 for the claims of accuracy and the Winchester brass, but now I'm concerned it might not have the punch for this projectile. For those of you shooting these cartridges, what powders and velocities are you getting with 168 grain bullets? Please share your experiences and save the speculations(I've speculated plenty already). Thanks in advance.

The 280AI runs 6-8 grains additional powder for another 100+ fps, generally speaking. 55 vs 62 or so, that with 140 grainers. I have had very nice custom rifles in both.

Neither is magic, but are solid cartridges. My 284 was on a short action M70 (think 3.05" mag box) which helped.

My action is a Remington 700. I mentioned standard in order to keep from veering away into magnum cartridges etc. I'm just deciding between these two, no others at this time.

I have a .280AI w. 26" 1:9". I run a 175 Berger in mine, and get 2975 over RL23. I did try 168s, but was not thrilled with the accuracy. I was right at 2990.

Have a 284 Win shooting 168 Berger VLDs. 52 gr of RL-17 for velocity of 2925 with 23 1/2" barrel. Custom reamer with .315" neck throated for the VLD. OAL 3.050" in a SA.

Selected the tighter neck to turn the inconsistent neck wall thicknesses in the Winchester brass. When Winchester originally announced they were going to discontinue production I bought 500 pcs. Then they did seasonal runs...oh well.

If I were to start fresh I'd buy some of the excellent Norma 284 win brass.
Read the details on how they make this brass here:

I've got a couple of boxes of 168s that I'm going to load in my Mashburn once it is finished. I'd experiment with 7828 as well, it tends to like heavier bullets in my experience. Also Barnes recommends as .050 jump and I have found that to be the case when loading TTSXs and LRX. I'm anxious to see how it turns out. For kicks and giggle I'm going to do a couple of the 168s in my wife's 7x57.

I'm shooting 284 with 168 classic hunters with 22" Lapua brass loaded at 3.110 COAL using H4350 getting 2803fps with no pressure but one hole if I do my job at 100y. I have shot 400 at 1 3/4 with a 8x. Killed an elk this year at 919 with it.

I have a .280 AI. I didn't go to the 168's because they are so loooong. My rifle happens to like the 150ttsx and the 150 gr ABLR very well. I have some hammer hunters to load for Spring. My accuracy node seems to be 57 gr of r26 and 4831sc . No velocity data yet.

Are you limited by magazine length? I'm using the hs precision magazine 3.7" coal.

Have a 280ai in 1/9 twist and so far shoots the 150s better than the 168s .I don't think that has anything overall to do with the caliber

I have had a 6.5x284 which I like but so far prefer loading the 280 case

.280 for me, and the145 grain ttsx is the sh-t with Hodgedon Superformance powder out of a Rem. 700 Kevlar stocked mountain rifle L.H. Kills like a lightning bolt..
