Ok so I was given a brand new 300 weatherby by my grandfather and I'm trying to get it ready for elk season this year. The question is that I'm looking at getting a nikon buckmaster 6-18x40 for 300 bucks out the door. Is it a good scope that will work up to 800 yards. Just getting into shooting long-range, and don't have big money for high dollar scopes. Anyone with any comments good or bad would be great. Thanks

ive read some reports where they do, but the 3 nikon buckmasters ive owned did not track what so ever. on the guns i had them on it didnt matter because i was holding for range not dialing.
on a 300 wby at 800 yds i would assume you will be dialing for range. its not in your 300 dollar budget but i dont thing there is a scope out there that will be reliabable at that range in the 300 dollar budget.

Weaver Grand Slam... no question, no competition in the 300 dollar range, whatsoever.
The turrets are the Micro-trac, which track as accurately as any scope at any price (including the 3000+ dollar scopes)...
Glass is good, and they have glass on par with the Leupold VX3s.
You don't need 18X for hunting MOA sized zones... get a Grand Slam in 3 to 10 power and it will not need to be replaced in the future. Natchez and Midway generally have the 3 to 10x Grand Slams for 300 dollars.
Three X will be much better for woods hunting and closer ranges than would 6x be... six power is too much for close in shots, in most cases anyway.
Most folks tend to use too much magnification for the purpose at hand. Even varmint rifles don't generally need more than 20x at the most (and that's shooting little prairie dogs).
You can quarter a bowling pin at 1000 yards with 10x... so that's more than plenty.
...the longest shot I've made on a groundhog was just under 800 yards with a Bushnell fixed 10x Elite.

Thanks for the remarks, I guess I will look a little more for the right scope. The grandslam sounds good but I was thinking of a little more zoom than 10 power but if it works then I might be interested just looking for something to put on my gun that will allow me to bring home some meat and be reliable till I can buy ahigh dollar scope.

You need to understand that just because it's a high buck optic don't make it any better than a low buck optic.
Keep the weaver on the Weatherby anfd forget about spending more on a scope you probably can't fully utilize anyway.
Sure, everyone wants a Schmidt and Bender or a Night Force or a Mark 4 but how many shooters can take full advantage of the high end optics, not too many I would assume.

The OP wants a cheapo scope, not a mid priced scope.
Maybe the low end Vortex but I don'r know anything about them ither than they are Chinese.....

the vortex viper runs from 299-459. i think you are confusing the viper with the viper pst

As said, I think you may confusing it with the PST or something, I have a couple of Vipers that were in the very low $300's on sale.
I have been looking at all the scopes that have been thrown out there and I think they all look good I also found the nikon monarch that looks pretty good and it ain't much more then the others anyone ever use a monarch? My grand father is a arms dealer so I can get everything for cost so I might be able to get a pretty good scope a bit cheaper then most folks. he td me he can get me a mark4 leopuld for less then 800 so I think that might be the way to go.
I have a Vortex Viper on one of my rifles and a Monarch on another. I would choose the Viper every time. The biggest complaint about the Monarch is the size of the reticle, it is three or four times the thickness of the Viper. The monarch reticle will almost completely cover a playing card at 400 yards. The glass is pretty good on both but I like the Vortex better.
